Looking into CHL, suggestions for prep & doc check list

#1

Post by atxgun »

I'm looking to take my CHL class in a month or two and want to make sure I have everything in order as I'm reading there's A LOT of info you need.

First thing that's going to be really annoying is the past 5 years of residency as that time window still encompasses a lot of residence hopping from college.

Is just the chronological order sufficient or do I need specific month/year ranges? I'm guessing I'll need the apt # and not just the addresses of the complexes?

I've already updated my drivers lic address as that's been out of date for a while so I'm still waiting on that if nothing else.

I've read something about needing a birth certificate but then someone else saying a TX DL would be sufficient? Which is it?

I also need 5 year employment history as well, correct?

Are there any other pieces of information or documents I should make sure to have available? Do I bring something like my birth certificate there or is it like they give you some forms to mail at your leisure from home?

Thx for any insight, I'm sure I'll have many other questions and posts in the comming months.

Is there any level of tactical proficiency I should be expected to have prior to taking the class? Is there any prerequisite knowledge I should have before going in?

Welcome to the forum.

On the application, they really want to know which counties you lived in. I would say to write down whatever was on your driver license or used as your mailing address. You need to put the month and year that you moved in and out.

For the shooting proficiency test, you just need to know how to load and handle your pistol and shoot accurately from a standing position (or sitting if you use a wheelchair) out to 15 yards.

I would recommend getting a copy of the booklet from http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/ls-16.pdf and reading it until you feel confident you understand it.

Other than that, read posts on this forum. It looks like there's a "trick" question on the revised test that you need to be aware of.

I was looking in the instructor forum and had run across someone complaining about intentionally confusion questions with double negatives and things like that. I'm guessing this isn't the type of certification you can find past copies of tests to review?

Also was wondering is there a newbie cheat sheet for various acronyms and terms frequently used around here, to help my understanding of the posts. I've already found what what an ND is and what "printing" means but they left me a bit confused at first :)

Here's the range Qualifications, it sounds like you will be rushed, but believe me you have plenty of time and it is very easy to pass:

A total of 50 rounds are fired during the course of the qualification test.
A score of 70%, or 175 points of a possible 250, is required to pass.
The target used is a B-27 which is a human-shaped silhouette target measuring 45 by 24 inches.
All shooting is from the ready position, which means the gun is already in your hands and aimed in.
No holster shooting or shooting from concealed is required.
Course of Fire:
3 yard line - 20 shots:
•1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
•2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
•5 shots in 10 seconds, once

7 yard line - 20 shots:
•5 shots in 10 seconds, once
•1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
•2 shots in 4 seconds, once
•3 shots in 6 seconds, once
•5 shots in 15 seconds, once

15 yard line - 10 shots:
•2 shots in 6 seconds, once
•3 shots in 9 seconds, once
•5 shots in 15 seconds, once

The B-27 target is 45" high by 24" wide. The inner scoring ring is approximately 18" high by 12" wide and counts 5 points. Shots within the next scoring ring count 4 points, and hits in the outer target zone count 3 points. Shots falling outside of the silhouette outline do not count.

I've never seen a copy of the written test floating around. It has 40 questions, and 35 of the are so easy you could probably pass now.

Not that I know of. This is the best we have: http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... php?t=3947

Google is very helpful with that kind of thing. If you type "define:word" it will give you definitions from various online dictionaries.

The test is 50 questions, and will be covered so well in class you probably won't miss any.

After many frustrating tries in the test area I don't think I'll be able to make my picture appear, but I think enough people are comfortable w/ copying & pasting a URL if they want to check it out.

This was after I first got my 9mm S&W back in april of 2007:

That was probably about 50 rounds worth, I'll be sure to get better :)

If you stay awake in class it should be easy to get at least 45 of 50 on the written test. The shooting test isn't difficult either. If you take your time and use the sights you should easily break 240 and I think you only need 175 to pass.

Cut and paste the IMG Code block they give you on the photobucket page.

Thx for the info about the img tag, someone PM'd me about it as well. Apparently my problem was I was copying the url i was viewing that had a ? with some stuff after which which the forum didn't like

At anyrate I just got back from the range figuring I should start getting in practice as it had been a while. I'm not certain but I'm guessing the scoring is just the number in the section you hit, w/ everything outside of the 7 counting as 0. If so i got a 164 on 35 rounds

7 x 4= 28
8x 8 =64
9 x 8 =72
on body but out of target 9
completely off 6

How many rounds do you do get to take? Someone said 250 was the max so I'm guessing 25? That means you have to get ever single shot in the scoring area to make 175. I definitely think some more practice is in order for me, CHL or not.

Is there any reason behind the very centric and symmetrical scoring of these silloutes? I mean I think a heart or head shot would count as more than the "bullseye" which looks like it might be partly just below the lungs.

You shoot 50 rounds. Target is scored as if the 10 and X rings = 5, the 9 ring = 4, the 8 ring = 3, the 7 ring = 2, outside the 7 ring in the black = 1, and outside of the black = 0.

Max score = 50 x 5 = 250.

The test is easy. Almost no one fails it. Many shooters "clean" the course (i.e. shoot 250).

Don't worry about it.

As for addresses, I think all you have to do is list whatever addresses you have put on your driver's license. Like if you did some college-related apartment hopping and didn't change the address on your driver's license I think it doesn't "count".

On the B-27 I think the 8 ring or better is five points, 7 ring is four points, and anywhere else in the black is three points. 50 rounds. Like I said it's pretty easy if you take your time and use the sights. Practice is a good idea in general but don't stress about the class.

I liked the old TX-PT targets but I guess they got tired of us taking headshots. :fire
