When are you required to produce your CHL to LEO?

I was reading somewhere that in TX if you get pulled over you have to give your CHL along w/ your DL, even if you aren't carrying? Is that true? It makes total sense you need your CHL when carrying just as you need your DL while driving but seems odd you need this extra documentation to lawfully operate a motor vehicle while not carrying.

I believe that was how the law read from 1995-'97.

But now, the law says that if a LEO demands your ID, and you're carrying at the time, you must also show your CHL.

In the case of a traffic stop, it's often recommended that you show your CHL even if you're not carrying (and inform the officer of your carry status). Reason being, when the officer runs your DL, he'll be informed that you have a CHL.

It puts everyone on a level, legal playing field.

KBCraig got it in one shot.

As I understand the law he is spot on, we also agree on the "show the cop your CHL and give status regardless since he's just going to come back to the window and ask you about it after he runs your DL.
