Ok, I have decided to get my CHL. I have not done anything yet and was not sure what the complete process was.
Here is what I think is correct, please correct me if I'm wrong.
1st - fill out application @
http://www.texasonline.state.tx.us/NASA ... elcome.jsp
2nd - take class and all that goes with it (prints, photos, etc...) then send that info in
3rd - wait for permit
4th - purchase firearm
Thanks,
Kevin

This would ussally be a better order. You want to atleast know the weapon you are going to be carrying. Not knowing might get you injured or worse one day.
Having said that I do know a couple that went though the whole deal and got their CHL's but have yet to get a pistol.
edited to add - You should also invest in a holster and wearing it around the house to get use to while waiting for the plastic. That way it wont be strange to you out in public.

That's about it, although I would move "purchase firearm" higher on the list. That way you can go practice with it

You can also use it for home defense, which includes carrying it in your vehicle.

Guardian, you may also need documents to verify your residency in Texas if you don't have a Texas driver license or state ID card, and if you have an arrest record you will need to document the disposition of each arrest (acquittal or conviction).

Ok, so I should get my firearm first. What is the process of that?
I think there is a waiting period on handgun purchases.
I went to Academy in Lubbock yesterday and looked at the SA XD 45 ACP, really
nice gun.
Thanks,
Kevin

I went to a gun show with cash, and walked out with a G36 from a dealer. No wait.

No waiting period. If you are 21 or older, just show your Texas ID and fill out the forms.
If you are 18-20, you can buy from a private party. But I guess you wouldn't be asking if you were under 21.

Lubbock does not have gun shows that often, what about a purchase from Academy?

There is only about a five minute wait for purchasing a handgun in Texas.

The XD is an excellent choice.

The process is more like this:
1. purchase firearm 2. sign up online 3. take class 4. send in completed application 5. Wait 6. wait. 7.wait. 8. wait. 9. wait. 10. wait.
11. fix some problem that you failed to do properly on application. 12. wait. 13.wait....
Some people have a fast turn around, but it still feels like forever. Good luck.

God Bless Texas
The XD is a fine choice, I carry an XD45 compact everyday.

Guardian,
Check out West Texas Military Surplus (2319 34th)
I was in there a couple of weeks ago looking at an XD 9 Sub compact - $470. XD 40 was same price.
Compact 45 was $490 IIRC.
Beats Academy, Gander, and Gun Shak (almost a $100 more

). I didn't check Sharpshooter's or Fred's. They are usually on the higher end.
Beware, there is another Gun Shop a few blocks west of WTMS. I bought a gun from him for a good price but when I was in there last he let his buddy fondle a gun. In the process the buddy pointed it all around the store...repeatedly. I stepped behind a safe and waited for the buddy to put it down. I then quickly left the store. He may have good prices and is friendly enough but I will not go there again. YMMV
