TFTT Advanced Tactical Pistol-Day 1

First I would like to say; that even a bad day on the range beats a great day in the office, and this was an OUTSTANDING day on the range. Beautiful weather, great instructor, and small group.

We started with a safety briefing, then discussed some basic fundamentals. Next we talked about the draw and persentation of the weapon, then moved to the range.

We did some dry practice with the 5 count draw, and the rehloster. We covered the concepts of "is he down?" "are there more?" and then to guard position. These techniques were used all day.

We started with controlled, deliberate fire from 5 yards so the instructor could evaluate everyones marksmanship and safe handling skills. We did several distances all the way to 25 yards.

We had a group that had good marksmanship skills, so we moved on to more fun. Hammers and controlled pairs from contact out to 15 yards.

We then covered kneeling fire. There are several reasons for kneeling fire, and we did so from varying distances.

Then weak hand casuality drills were done. This is drawing and firing, and eventually reloading and firing with the strong hand only. We did this standing and sitting.

We also covered "body shifts" moving the entire body left, right or to the rear as you draw and fire. This causes you to move from the bad guys point of aim, and he has to re-aquire you.

Also we covered cover and concealment, and the difference. You should always look for and move for cover when engaging when possible. Reloads should also be done from cover when available.

We did stationary turns. The purpose is to maintain a good shooting stance when engaging a threat that does not start out standing directly in front of you. Left turns, right turns with forward movement, right turns with rearward movement, rear turns both to the left and right.

We did speed reloads, those from a locked-back slide.

We had to manage our ammo and do tactical or administrative reloads whenever possible to avoid shooting to slide lock, except for when doing those specific drills.

Then the timer came out, and everything we had done was then put under the clock.

We covered malfunctions, and discussed safety regarding cook-offs, squib loads, slow primers, broken sears, etc.

Marksmanship was stressed throughout all phases. Safety was paramount.

We then did our level 1 and 2 qualifications, and practiced for the level 3 qual we will have tomorrow. All quals are timed.

We fired nearly 300 rounds, I would say.

Wish some of you had been there. It was good fun and great training. I am looking forward to tomorrow. I am sure I missed some things we did.

I am real sorry not to be there, too.

What fun thing did I do instead? Pack boxes, load trailers, pack some more boxes, fight with the wife about what to throw away, what to keep............

Moving is such fun..........

And to think.......I could have been at the range.

Maybe there will be a "next time"..........
