I will be getting my CHL soon (months?) here in TX and have a Kahr P9 9mm which I got to be my primary carry gun.

However, I love the S&W 642 revolver, so picked up a no-lock model yesterday.

Now I am wondering: Do most folks here carry something like the 642 as their BUG or as an only carry gun?

I'm thinking carrying two may be overkill but not sure which would make the better carry weapon if I only carry one or the other.

Thoughts?

I carry an airweight a lot when it's hot.

I carry a .45 ACP 1911 as primary and either a no lock 642 or a Kahr K9 for backup when I know I am going to be in known bad areas of town.

Carry both, I carry a .40 M&P as a primary and a Taurus lite weight as a backup. M&P strongside in a Don Hume 721 OT the Taurus weakside front pocket in a Nemisis. At lest one spare mag for the M&P and two speed strips for the Taurus. This gives me a minimum of 46 rounds available.

I carry a 638 in a slim appendix holster. conceals well and very comfortable allowing me to carry w/o adjusting my attire to hide. I feel comfortable carrying this one piece.

I carry a compact gun as my primary and have a rifle as my backup in case the pistol isn't enough.

Jeff ... I would recommend carrying whatever you are most comfortable with as your primary piece if all other factors are equal.

I've heard good things about the Kahr as a carry piece, and certainly a revolver is a pretty safe choice for carry as well. Other factors might influence one or the other frame other the other, and I don't think carrying both is over doing it if practical, so it depends on you.

Inquiring minds want to know:

What is a "no-lock" revolver?

How does it differ from its opposite style?

I'm no expert, but the S&W 642 comes in two versions:
1) with an internal lock which has a small key with which you can lock the trigger mechanism
2) without the internal lock (as in most revolvers)

I was guided toward the "no-lock" as many purists feel it is just another thing to foul up the wonderful simpleness and reliability of revolvers.

I carry a 340PD everyday and it is my primary on Sundays. Through the rest of the week I am carrying two. I would rather have another pistol than have to reload.

New to this forum. Don't want to hijack the thread, but doesn't it depend on what type of weapon is on ht OP's permit?

"The handgun proficiency certificate must
be no more than two years old and shall specify if it is valid
for a revolver or semi-auto pistol based on the proficiency
certificate.
The Department will issue a license to carry only for the
categories of firearms listed on the handgun proficiency
certificate. A person who is renewing a license to carry a
concealed handgun must renew their handgun proficiency
certificate."

Please correct me if this information is out of date or if people usually become qualified for both at once. Thanks!

im pretty sure it works like this in Texas, but someone correct me if im wrong.
if you qualify with a revolver..you may only carry a revolver
if you qualify with an automatic ..you may carry both

Absolutely correct. You're only restricted on the type of handgun you can carry if you qualify on a revolver. If you qualify with a semi-auto, you can carry either/both.
