Welcome Gray - This topic has been discussed previously and the consensus in not to have or use handcuffs. There are variety of reasons not to use handcuffs.

1. You have a CHL and are not an LEO.

2. You have to get close to the BG to put on cuffs. If you get that close then he can harm you. He might be faking just to lure you close enough to try to take your gun or harm you. If he is obviously hurt so badly [or dead] that he can't harm you then you don't need handcuffs anyway.

3. You don't want to be exposed to the BG's blood. A knee in the back is also not a good idea. Keep the downed BG covered from a safe distance.

4. LEOs with experience and specialized training can have problems handcuffing an uncooperative BG. Most LEOs probably prefer to have a backup officer when cuffing a suspect.

5. There is also a possibility of causing injury by the improper use of handcuffs.

If you are going to carry extra gear, bring some more bullets.

P.S. I am unsure about your comment about body armor, but I am sure that others will post their opinions shortly.

I will say if you work a blue collar or tech job, it's handy to have a couple of those plastic cable ties.

If you end up hitting someone and they do take off running or what not, chances are he will show up to a hospital. Hospitals are pretty good about calling the PD if someone comes in by POV.

IMHO: anyone who wants to carry handcuffs must not have much experience trying to apply them to an uncooperative critter.

I look at my CHL as personal/family protection....if I have eliminated a threat to my or my families personal safety...then the rest is up to a LEO...not me...
My daughter is a Gold Badge/Glock wearing US Agent (Not supposed to say what specifically)....I can tell you they have significant training on "handcuffing" suspects....for a reason.....

I would say not to use them also, but having a pair or plastic cuffs probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Never know when they could come in handy. I know my buddy(LEO) only carries one pair on him when he's working and he's got a spare in the car. I have years of experience in using cuffs on idiots. It's not easy thing to do. You can get hurt doing it also. Definitely need practice with them.
