New CHL first Tme out.

I got home on Friday, and was surprised to have a letter from DPS. I was a little worried because I thought it would be at least another 30 days before I got anything back. Well lucky me, my license came in. I decided to go for the walmart experience, and an experience it was. I stepped out of the car, and had a face off moment. The wind caught my jacket and in a moment I was no longer concealed. I quickly covered up for the most part the rest of the trip was uneventful. I did find that I'm much more aware of how I reach for things, and if one of my jacket flaps moves. I also switched my wallet into the other pocket, just in case I have to go for somethings.

Today I went to see Avatar in IMAX, I had a bit of time to kill, so I decide to visit a few stores. I went to Orileys auto parts store, and Ross Department store, and Big Lot. They were all close, and I not super familiar with that part of Dallas. I noticed a Gun Busters style sign but nothing official. I know the Gun Busters sign isn't a 30.06, or 51% sign, but my CHL instructor gave me the impression, this sign means basically the same thing.

Call him right now and ask for your money back. If he doesn't answer, call him every hour until he does and then demand a refund. Gun-busters are irrelevant to CHL's. Only a valid 30.06 prohibits entry. and 51% has to be posted now.

Did he teach you what makes a 30.06 valid?

First of all, Welcome to the forum.

I too had a similar question, and got a lot of great information in my post. Please check it out: http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=30784" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I now know that only a PROPER 30.06 Notification or 51% sign (at a true 51% establishment) prohibit carry.

Thanks for the Welcome, and the info. I'm sure he was trying to teach us not to be cavalier but, I after reading the law, I came to the same conclusion. Only two signs are valid in the state of Texas in relation to non government, or educational facilities. But even in one of the Gun Busters sign situations, I would bet I'm fine as long my weapon is concealed.

My instructor did go over what a proper 30.06 sign is suppose to look like, and I look for them like a hawk. I'm not so worried about the 51% sign, since I don't drink, and nor do I normally frequent places that would make most of their money from alcohol but I will keep an eye out for them all the same.

Although I had a great time in the class, and would be happy to renew with him when the time comes.

My instructor was crystal clear - The sign must be posted in English and Spanish, must be the size of the b27 target and must conform with the legislated verbiage. Anything else (line/gun) is not valid. I brought up the issue of a DPS employee instructing otherwise and he unequivocally dismissed that direction.

If on the other hand you are asked to leave because of you have been spotted YOU MUST LEAVE> This does not apply to the workplace- they don't need to post 30.06 and you must comply.

Hope this helps clear things up.
