I am anticipating this is going to turn into a love/hate discussion but let's have at it.

I went out on Saturday and picked up a Sig Mosquito .22 LR after Teamless and I did a little shooting out at PSC and talked about the cost of ammo on the way home.

I looked at the Ruger, S&W, Walther, et al. but the feel of the Sig just fit the bill. I have to be honest... my two primary motives were:

1) Find something I could run ammo through on a regular basis that wouldn't break the bank
2) Get something the little woman could shoot as a starter gun that wouldn't scare her too badly

I've read numerous posts where folks had issues with FTF, etc. with this pistol but after 100 rounds today, I only saw one problem. That was when the Mrs. tried to double-clutch the slide. Once we got over that, no problems whatsoever. I used Fiocchi 40 grain, 1255 fps.

So, what are your thoughts on the "skeeter" and can you assuage my guilt for buying it in the first place. I keep trying to convince myself I did it for her...

Honestly, even with the problems I had with mine the first time I took it shooting, I love it. I think I found the ammo it likes and put 350 rounds through it last week.

Like you, I looked at the others, but found the Mosquito fit not only my needs, but my hand. Was going to buy a new one but came across a can't pass deal on a slightly used one.

Cheap and fun to shoot. What more could you ask for?

No arguments here... what ammo did you find it likes to eat?

No, I definitely hear you about trying to keep the cost down. I purchased a 9mm for practice/target shooting, as the ammo is MUCH cheaper than my CCW.

I know nothing about the Mosquito, however.

Never had a problem with ours. We use it as a starter gun in basic pistol classes, especially for shooters with small hands. Never had so much as a hiccup with it.

I say you made a good choice!

Agree with you all. After 7-800 rounds of the recommended CCI cartridges it now happily eats Rem Golden Bullets and others. I think the people who have problems are trying to use the cheaper ammo before breaking in the barrel with the recommended CCI.

Never got mine to work very well. Sold it and bought 9mm and 357sig conversion barrels for my glock 27. 9mm a little cheaper than the 40's but still gives me the same feel as my carry ammo when shooting.

Of course later I bought an older ruger bearcat for my boys to learn on. Very light and great for little hands.

I've been pleased with mine. I've found that CCI MiniMags and Federal AutoMatch work well and Remington Golden Bullets do not. Winchester SuperX HV is OK but not as reliable as the CCI or Fed ammo.

It's reliable, cheap ammo, and similar in usage (excepting the safety of course) to my P239. It feels like a "real" pistol in your hands which I find many .22s do not.

CCI Minimags and Federal bulk pack from WalMart. Wolf Match Grade also ran pretty good through it, but not as well as the former 2.

Thanks for the replies everyone! My wife really enjoyed shooting with it (and I did too) so I think it was a good choice. It definitely has the feel of a real auto where I can't say the same for some of the other 22s I looked at.

Which one did you get? The 5" or 3.5" barrel? If it's the 3.5, how does it shoot? Accuracy, have you had to change the front post or spring?

BB not sure if you are asking me or the OP.

Anyway mine is the regular 3.5" barrel. Like all the more recent Mosquitos it was shipped with the lighter spring installed and I have not had any reason to change it. Neither have I needed to change the front sight. The accuracy is OK. It's not a target pistol for sure. I use it to get some rounds down range and remember what I'm supposed to be doing before I swap to my other pistols. It works well in this role and is more accurate than I am. It saves some $ as I can use cheap ammo to warm up with. I would estimate that I can get 10 rounds in 2" groups at 7 yards if I'm not doing something stupid.

It has also been a good pistol to get my son used to shooting without either of us being concerned that it's going to jump out of his hands!

I have the 4.9" silencer barrel on mine using the standard spring with good results thus far. Shooting at 10 yards, I was fairly accurate with around 3-4 inches of the bullseye but I get better as the day wears on. Didn't make any changes to the front post either.

That's the basic gun I have... the Sportsman model with the weighted compensator. The more I shoot it, the better it gets.

Well Brad, I tried a box of the Federal from Wal-Mart but it didn't work out so well. One brass was stuck in the chamber and I had to manually extract it plus several others FTE. After reloading with the Fiocchi, it ran like a champ for 100 rounds. After I break this puppy in a bit more, I will try the Federal again and see if it's just due to the newness of the gun.

It's a fun little pistol to shoot though... I had a blast!
