Utah or Texas ? Or.....Both ?

Hello everyone ! Im new to this site and while reading several post throughout my workday Ive noticed that all of you are very nice people that look out for your fellow citizen. So Im happy to be here.
Two days ago I put a $75 deposit down for a class at cabelas on july 11th to get my CHL for Utah , and I thought it also included Texas. But after reading many of the post here I feel that I made a mistake. The class alltogether cost $215.25 and is a 6 hour class w/ no written test and no range qualification. I went to this guy because my Father ( who passed away july 12th of cancer) went through him to get a Utah to go alongside his Texas CHl that he had since the law was passed, and he also took my mother who now has her Utah license. I talked to her today and after reading the WFAA article she has decided to wait untill she gets her Texas Chl before she carries. Should I get my money back and Go through someone who will do both for the same price ? Im just a little confused and feel I am dealing with one of the few who is selling the idea of bypassing the TX Chl and getting just the Utah. Did I make a huge mistake or am i just overthinking? How much am I suppose to pay for both ....alltogether?

I live in TX, so I go by a TX CHL. I never considered Utah or other states. Simply, if you are resident of TX, you drive with TX DL, CHL should be treated the same way, just my opinion.

I agree completly . I just am wondering if it will cost the same $215 to get both ? I was under the impression that it was ok at the time I was told about it , but now that I know Utah does nothing but a background check , i feel I made a mistake. I want a Tx CHL regardless. I would just like to know if I can do it all at the same time . My mother just realized that .

That sounds really, really expensive for a 6 hour class.

Its looks real fishy now that ive been reading up on it. I hope I can get my deposit back if the instructor doesnt also provide me with a TX course also, which he does teach. Tommorow im calling him first thing. I now know why my Dad took his course with my Mom. Because he probably felt that she wouldnt pass the TX course before he died because of something stupid . He just wanted her to be able to have something on her . I know there is a bounch of carriers who feel everyone should take the TX course , I even feel that way . But if I knew I only had a few months to live I would do whatever I could to cut corners ( which is legal right now) so my wife could be able to protect herself when i am gone. I think anyone with a good record and some shooting experiance should be able to carry. I know cops who are just as good at shooting a pistol as my mom , and they went to school for it. And I also know many people who are CHL holders who are alcoholics and have prescription drug problems , but that sure didnt stop them from getting a license.

Let us know how your discussion turns out with the Instructor. I am sure that we would all be very interested in how it turns out for you.
Go for that TX CHL first!

Crossfire Training ( crossfire-training.com ) offers Texas CHL (also at Cabelas) for $125, and will add Utah for $25. That includes everything except the fees to the appropriate states. Utah wants $65.25, and Texas varies -- starting at $140 and going down depending upon various discounts. Here is a link to Texas fees:

However, it is not done in 6-hours. Texas REQUIRES a 10-hour class.
P.S. -- Welcome to the Forum!

Apparently if you only have a Utah CHL you are a bad shooter!

I know this is confusing because there are several instructors who teach at Cabela's. Looks like you put down a deposit for Larry Bockman's class. That is a UTAH ONLY class.
Unfortunately, he does not advertise it as a Utah class, so that creates some confusion. Here is his blurb from the Cabela's webpage:
Concealed Handgun License Certification Course
Save your valuable time and earn your Concealed Handgun License in only 5 hours and your license will be valid in 30 states including Texas. No written test, no range qualification and no renewal classes are ever required. Very limited seating and pre-registration is required by calling CHL Instructor Larry Bockman
9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m
Location: Cabela's Conference Center, Upstairs Rear of Store Behind Camping.
Crossfire Training teaches both Texas and Utah, and we only offer Utah as an addition to Texas, or as a stand-alone if you can give me a compelling reason why you cannot have or do not want a Texas CHL. We charge $125 for the Texas CHL and $25 additional if you want to add Utah.
Unfortunately, we have been confused with both Bockman, who teaches at Cabela's, and Brasuell, who gave the news interview and teaches in the Denton area. We are NOT affiliated with them.

Wow, for folks new to CHL and not privvy to forums such as this one the Ad above can be very misleading though it is in no way false. I consider this a disservice by the instructor.

She is being modest. Not only does she charge less, but her class standards are very high. My wife took her CHL with them, and when I renew, it will be with them.
If you take a strictly Utah CFP course from one of these unethical (in my opinion) providers, they may not give you the instruction you
STILL need to be in compliance with
TEXAS law. Having a Utah CFP does not exempt you from Texas CHL law. You would still have to know and follow Texas law - just as you would have to know and follow Utah law if you were carrying in Utah under your Texas CHL with Utah reciprocity.
Since the Utah only instructors are not, AFAIK, required to follow any Texas guidelines in their teaching. You may just be digging yourself a legal hole for the state of Texas to bury you in if, God forbid, you should ever have to actually use your weapon, and you wind up using outside of the guidelines of Texas law because you were never properly instructed.
The people who teach Utah CFP courses as a way to circumvent Texas CHL law are doing a disservice to the state, and to those of us who have bothered to do things by the book - even if we thought it was too expensive, or too easy or not easy enough to get, etc., etc. Those folks are snakes, and I can't stand 'em.
