More on vague school laws

#1

Post by TheCytochromeC »

Greetings all. I'm new to the forums and I've had my CHL for a few months now. When I took the CHL course it was well established that having a handgun on campus is illegal. This, from what i understand, becomes vague as you enter the parking lot. I've scanned through threads and skimmed through Texas handgun laws and still feel unclear. I decided that it would be best to speak with the LEOs of the campus and see what their take is. When i asked the teller at the police office counter (not a LEO btw) what the policy is on having a firearm in your car she replied, "I think you should leave it in your trunk." I felt misinterpreted so i asked her again is it legaland what condition (loaded or unloaded) if any is preferred. She responded with, " If we don't see it then it's not there." I was flabbergasted. This does not held me in any way nor does it show local perception of gun knowledge or safety. Can any one shed some light?

Steve Rothstein is an active LEO. IMO, He and Charles Cotton are 2 of the most respected opinions on this board.

Summary:
It's illegal to carry on the 'Premises' of the school. That means Buildings only.
If a school is gov't owned, a 30.06 sign holds no legal weight.
If it's private, 30.06 signs do matter, but not as long as you don't remove it from your car.
Illegal and grounds for expulsion are 2 different things. Then can expel you for something that is not illegal.

People call the police on squirrels in attics.

Concealed is concealed
YMMV
IANAL

It almost seems like you had this in a Wordpad document on your desktop ready to paste in!

Great job with the succinct answer to the question though. :thumbs2:
