Just got my plastic and have a few quick questions.

1: I frequently pick up my girlfriend who is a student at UT. As I understand the law it is OK to be carrying as along as I do not get out of my car on to university property. (I drive, pick her up, drive off, don't leave car)

Since the roads are public even though they run through the university this should be OK? (I believe this is what the instructor said during my class)

2: If I have to leave my gun in my car because of Polling place, 30.06, 51%, rather not take a ride because of questionable signage, etc...

if it is just in the glove box unlocked but concealed and it is stolen, am I responsible for any actions that might be taken with my gun?

it technically was locked up in a car but not in a safe or safety device (lets say a 17 year old thug busts a window and steals your gun, did you grant access to a minor?)

Keep your car locked. You are not responsible if somebody breaks into your car and steals your gun. (Even a minor.)

(This all should have been covered in your class!)

If you have a Texas CHL you're OK as long as you don't go into buildings.

Lock your car doors!

Ethics would blame the criminal first. The gun also wouldn't have been stolen if it was under your control, so the people who won't let you carry are a distant second.

Thanks for the replies. I just noticed that someone had posted a almost identical topic a little down the page. I am a Newbie when it comes to forums , sorry. What do you all generally recommend when you can't carry where you are going?

Hello lostcow550. Welcome to the forum and congratulations on obtaining your CHL.

On the rare occasions (such as going into the Post Office or Voting) that I must disarm
and leave my firearms in the truck/car, I have a small portable gun vault that employs a
steel cable to secure it to the frame of the seat. It's not foolproof, but it guards against
the common "smash and grab". I simply lock the guns inside and slide it under the seat
so it's out of view until my return.

You can find affordable entry level portable gun vaults at Academy or you can search
on-line for more secure models....Good luck.

Those can also be bolted to the floor!

I wish universities would provide outdoor lockers so I could carry my piece to and from my car, which is when I really want it and would be most likely to need it. But they don't, so I lock my gun in the glovebox. It's not the best solution but it's the best I've got right now.

If you're worried about it being stolen if you leave it in your car, invest in a lockbox that can be bolted to the floor. You can even camouflage it by finding the same kind of carpeting that's in your car and fitting it around the box. I know that, for larger vehicles like trucks and Expeditions, one company makes locking boxes that bolt into your center console. A criminal wouldn't be able to see it since the "lid" to the console covers it, and even if they found it...there's no way they're getting it out! They give you an option between a combination or keyed lock, too -- nice! I've been trying to find the website to no avail...anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Consolevault.us is the first one that popped up when I searched. I like the idea, but what do you do with all the stuff normally kept in the console?

Well, for me, that's my "truck gun" and a spare mag for it...

Not being a wiseguy here...I used to cram my consoles full of junk too...the lifestyle changes are often subtle and slow to come...

I'm new, and still waiting on my CHL. My tentative solution is "Nano Vault 200 Hand Gun Storage Safe" available at Amazon (about $25 delivered) and other places. I plan to rely on my time tested practice of obscuring valuables in a pile of clutter on the floor behind the front seat. That has worked for me for years with my laptop which I understand is a prime target for "theft from auto" crime.

My boss once looked at my back floorboard and told me to clean out my car. I replied if I did, everyone would see the $20,000.00 cash there for my casino trip, and my gun.

Don't be giving away our "It's just trash why break into that car" secret.



(P.S., never take $20,000.00 to a casino; it just gets lost anyway)
