Forgot to show LEO my CHL
Hello everybody. I'm new to the forum and to CHL. I got mine about a month ago and traveled this past weekend to The Colony for my grand daughters 6th birthday. My wife and I picked her up from her kindergarten class friday afternoon, and because of some road construction, ended up in a part of town I had never been. Next thing I know the sirens and flashing lights are right behind me. I pull over wondering whats going on. The LEO comes to my window and very rudely informs me I'm going 35mph in a school zone. I had no idea, but ok, heres my license & insurance. Upon returning to my vehicle, he asks me if I have my weapon. I reply yes I do, He starts screaming at me that I am supposed to show my CHL to him to which I reply I know that, but in all of my confusion over the traffic stop, I simply forgot. He them tells me he can take me to jail over this. Now granted I was in the wrong, but this 3:30 on a friday afternoon and it is me, my wife, and my grandaughter in the car, and this guy is out of control. He had me sign the speeding ticket & then just walked back to his car and took off. Needless to say, I had some explaining to do to not only my grand daughter, but to my son and his wife as well! Moral of this story: Don't forget to show your CHL to an LEO!

There is no penalty for not showing your CHL to the officer if you are still in your car. The requirement is that you still have to show it, but no harm if you do not.KarrMar wrote:Hello everybody. There is no LEGAL penalty... I think you got a taste of the practical penalty though: A PO'ed Officer who goes beserk.Beiruty wrote:

Sorry it was one of "those types" who pulled you over. I hope I never one into one of those types again. Back in CA I got pulled over when I was 17 for "driving recklessly" (I swerved to avoid someone who pulled in front of me

Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
Guess I need to get more versed on the legalities of my CHL. The guy had the upper hand because I didn't know the law when it came to showing my CHL. I'm still mad at the way I was treated and would have loved to have been able to straighten him out. Complete jackwagon. Worst Ive ever had contact with.
Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
I carry my CHL in my wallet in front of my Drivers License for that very reason: otherwise I would likely forget.
In your case, no harm, no foul (other than the trauma from the screaming officer and the ticket you would have probably received anyway).

To the OP: your ticket should have the officer's badge number...would be worth a call to the chief/supervisor, etc. Sounds like the jackwagon needs a refresher on the law, and how to deal with people. Like mentioned above, I carry my CHL in front of my DL in my wallet's outside window. ![tiphat :tiphat:](./images/smilies/tiphat.gif)

Amen. You DO have some recourse. Whether the officer's supervisor will follow through, and in what manner, is out of your control; but it is a good idea to make the effort.PUCKER wrote:To the OP: your ticket should have the officer's badge number...would be worth a call to the chief/supervisor, etc. Sounds like the jackwagon needs a refresher on the law, and how to deal with people. That's what was thinking. Explain that you were not familiar with that area and aren't contesting the ticket, sorry about that in a school zone BTW, but that the officer was rude and misinformed regarding failure to display your CHL.PUCKER wrote:To the OP: your ticket should have the officer's badge number...would be worth a call to the chief/supervisor, etc. Sounds like the jackwagon needs a refresher on the law,
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Just got off of the phone with jackwagon's supervisor. Couldn't really tell if it did any good or not but at least I tried.

Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
Where was this at ?
And yes you should have shown it, I bet you won't forget next time. I had one of my students get pulled over by CCPD rookie officer and failed to show the CHL. This young officer fresh out of the academy went nuts , cuffed and stuffed hi, and told him it was a felony. WRONG
You should have been taught how to deal with LEO in your CHL class, sounds like either you weren't or you might have missed it.????
Either way, read up on the laws...know them. It's in your best interest. If you feel you were not taught properly, I will allow you to audit one of my classes free so you can be better informed.

Carry safe and carry when and where you can. I'm just sayin'.

The side of the road is no place to argue law with a police officer. He will not admit he's wrong.KarrMar wrote:Guess I need to get more versed on the legalities of my CHL. If he's out of control and pushes it too hard, demand that he bring in his supervisor.
You did OK considering, especially with the followup call. I'm better at writing a letter. A letter goes into his file.
