I'm new to the forum, and looking for some answers. I have completed everything relating to submitting my CHL app, and am curious as to the process for DPS.

My materials got to Austin on 11/15, and I'm still stuck in background review - and it's frustrating because I see others on here who have received their license already, who sent their stuff in after I did.

Here are a few questions, looking for info about the DPS process and why mine is taking so long:

1). I have lived in Texas for about 6 years, just over 5 at same address. But I didn't get my TX drivers license until about 4 months into my tenure at my current residence. I know you need to get it sooner, but not everyone can spend hours in line at the DPS office. Do they match up DL records with what you stated on your app, and since my DL date of issue doesn't match my residence timing on the CHL app, they are confused?
2). I have had three different places of employment in the last 5 years, in three DFW area cities. Does this cause extra time? Do they have DPS employees in each county or city who do local background checks? How long does that usually take? I know exactly what is on my FBI background check - I had that done separately before applying through a relative who is an agent - so the federal one shows what I expect it to....
3). I have a public intox that was dismissed and expunged, and another class A that I had deferred adjudication on (started probation in March 2007, finished 9 months later). The class A is now sealed under an order of non disclosure. I'm 100% sure neither will disqualify me (asked DPS about both prior to applying). But due to this, will the process take longer? Are you automatically put in a "trouble maker" pile at DPS and your app and background goes through more scrutiny if you have prior run ins with the law? I sent a copy of the order of non disclosure which was the final disposition in the class A case, and sent a copy of the dismissal from the municipal court in the public intox case. DPS also said I could send copies of the certified documents instead of the actual certified copies.

Sorry if already covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find much on the background check timeframe piece, as well as what DPS does on their end from a local background check standpoint.

Answers to your questions.....

1). Don't think so because I doubt the "left arm talks to the right arm" at licensing bureaus, but maybe an instructor can confirm.
2). I believe they forward to a DPS rep in each city/county you have worked and lived. Being you are in one of the most populous areas, and assuming that the proportion of applications is proportionate to the population, and also assuming government inefficiency (they don't necessarily add x% more staff because of x% more population in an area) your wait could be longer. Can't say for sure though....again, maybe an instructor can weigh in?
3). Assume a record will cause delays - there is probably another level of approval required by maybe a supervisor or manager in the CHL dept at DPS. Again, common sense speaking here, maybe an instructor can confirm.

Hope it works out for you. Going through something similar with my wife, but she's traveling on business so isn't here thinking about it everyday.

My application was sent in December 6th. Checked every week and had the usual still waiting note. Checked tonight and see that all has been received and that I was in the waiting background check status. Will be curious how long that now takes. I have no criminal record. Does anyone have any history on waiting background check to approval?

You need to get onto the DPS website and pay for your criminal history. I see deferred adjudication items whenever I run criminal history. I would bet both of these violations you mentioned are on your history. Depending on what was deferred, as domestic violence, drug charges, ect get deferred that could be a red flag.

Patience guys. If you know there's nothing to disqualify you then it's only a matter of time. They might also be a little slower because of the holidays and people taking time off just like the rest of us.

Thanks guys. I know I am eligible - also no need to pay for a criminal history as I have the FBI file on myself (thanks to a family member). Thinking the holidays are delaying them, as well as the fact I have several jurisdictions where I have worked.

Just don't want to fall into the bucket of those who don't hear anything and are automatically denied because technically after 90 days with no decision that is a denial (411.177 c).

Andy - Be patient. November 15, 2012 to December 28, 2012 is not a loooooong time in "government time."

This is a very good model for how NOT to proceed with a CHL renewal. I offer it up for all y'alls instruction and edification.

It took about a week to 10 days for it to show up after it was "mailed."

To the OP: there you have a few pointers on what NOT to do ( ), and an approximate time span. Now this was for a renewal, but I'm assuming that they take about the same amount of time.
