Proper Documentation?

I read that I'll need...a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate or certified proof of age.

I don't have a certified copy, was born overseas. Can I get my passport certified? Or my citizenship papers?

What type of documents are acceptable?

IANAL, but I would expect that a genuine U.S Passport would be acceptable as proof of age...

Do you have a Texas driver license? That will do.

You don't say whether you are a U.S. citizen or immigrant.

I don't know where you read that you need a certified copy.
The additional sheet in my application packet just stated that for those listing a birth place abroad, they need a copy of US passport, birth certificate or green card.
I just sent in a photo copy of my green card.

I sure hope it's going to be good enough...

I am a citizen, born in an American military hospital in Germany. I'm a brat.

Here is where I read needing certified documents: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/ls-16.pdf Section GC 411.174

I have a passport, citizenship papers and german record of birth.

Thanks!

I was also born overseas (many years ago ) and had the same concerns as you. I sent a copy of my citizenship certificate along with my CHL application package. Had my permit in hand 45 days later.

I would think that the passport would also be acceptable as proof of citizenship.

A passport is the definitive proof of citizenship. I know this because my son is an immigrant (adopted as a baby).

I was also born overseas, though as a US citizen. I sent in a plain photocopy of my Certificate of Birth Abroad. That seemed to be sufficient, and I was never asked about it. If you weren't born a citizen, they might be more strict on having the copies certified. I'd give the folks at the CHL office a call and see what they say.

EDIT: just read your post stating that you were a military brat born overseas. Just photocopy your Certificate of Birth Abroad, and you should be good.

FWIW, I was not born a US citizen, I was naturalized in 1956. I was a subject of the British Empire before then. I sent a plain copy of my citizenship certificate with my application and it was accepted without question.

I know this doesn't apply to cmbrust's situation, but I share this info in the hope that it will be of use to others reading this thread who are in similar circumstances.

Thank you all for your answers. I will submit copies of my documents. The "certified" wording threw me for a loop.
