I am taking the class and test this weekend. I am renting a pistol for the test so I went to practise and get a feel for the Glock today. A friend told me to watch my shots on the test, to spread them out. She said that if I hit the same spot, it won't be counted. I should move around the target within the zone.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Are the targets scored after each distance?

I may go back this week to practise moving around the zone.

When I took my class we were scored after we finished shooting the entire test. We had one fellow that that shot all but his last 3 shots into an area the size of a drink coaster and wasn't counted off for shooting into the same place. He shot 1 less than a perfect score.

When I took my test the gentleman next to me put all fifty shots in the center. Not one shot outside inner circle, Retired marine! Oh, he got a perfect score.

My advice is not to worry about it. The instructor can tell if you are legitimately shooting a ragged hole.

If you have any doubt, ask the instructor.

I would say your friend is wrong. If you put all your shots in one hole, they should all be scored, and the ROs are pretty likely to notice how well you shoot.

Be as accurate as you can me, unless you are already a superb shot you won't have to worry about spreading your shots out.

My wife shot a perfect score on her requalification and nobody questioned whether her shots passed through a few holes or not, even though she made a couple of large ragged holes, she was obviously shooting that well. (Of course she was using what was then my XD9, which she then promptly decided was hers.)

Thank you. That was my question, if you shoot out all the paper, how can they count the shots.

If you shoot out a hole in the paper, the most valid assumption will be that all of your shots passed through that hole.

In the 1912 Olympics George Smith Patton Jr, participating on the US Pentathalon Team fired a one hole group on his target, and was scored with one miss, costing him the gold medal.

Since then the Olympics have made provisions for situations like that.

CHL qualifications are not Olympics.

I agree. It will be pretty obvious if you are shooting through the big hole you've shot in the center, or are completely missing the target :)

I also shot a perfect score on my chl test. Instructor looked at the big raggedy hole in the center, and the few other holes closely surrounding it and jokingly said, "I guess I'll give it to ya." :)

She was scored a perfect 250.
Dont try to moive around on your target. Shoot for the center. Range Officers know the difference.

There's nothing that I like better than to have student's shoot the center out of the target, they are usually the safest shooter's too.

ElGato is an instructor & an excellent pistol shot too.

Back when we shot .38s loaded with wadcutters for our annual qualification, it was typical for the 3- and 7- yard portions to produce a nice clean hole about 3" in size, right in the center of the target.

It was always rumored, but never confirmed, that some of our "perfect" scoring shooters had a habit of making such a hole, then just aiming for the berm when shooting from 15 and 25 yards.

Like I said, it was never confirmed. But when we switched to 9mm (no more wadcutters!), they stopped getting perfect scores.

A don't recall an exact score even going to the state, or had it to begin with???

All we got from ElGato was a "pass" test & "pass" shooting, on the TR-100 form right??? Instructors discretion on the range qual...

Great. My practice target looks like Flintknapper's daughter's. It's ok that I shoot like a girl. Especially since I am a girl! (Fixed it for you. LT )

I will admit that I throw like a girl, elbow forward and toss the ball like a catapult. It does reach it's intended target!
