Mr. Gibson lost his right to own guns after his family violence conviction in 2011. Federal law prohibits all those with felony convictions, and those with certain domestic violence misdemeanors, from possessing guns. He had loss his gun rights. The Federal Prosecutor was told to reinstate Gibson’s gun sights. She refused and we fired.

Decisions are being made based on relationships and loyalty, not based on facts or expertise or sound analysis, which is very alarming given what is at stake is our public safety.

“The actor Mel Gibson’s years-old misdemeanor conviction on domestic violence charges made headlines again this week, after a Trump administration official said she was fired for refusing to recommend that his gun rights be restored.”

Misdemeanor.
I think the first restriction appeared in 1994 and lasted for the duration of any court order and pressure mounted by 1996 to make it permanent. It doesn't matter if it's a misdemeanor or not, it's based on a domestic violence charge. Just like a any felony conviction regardless of the nature prohibits firearm and ammunition possession, even non-violent convictions like writing bad checks over $2,500 in Texas. I'm not voicing any opinion whether that's appropriate or not, just passing along information.

"A DOJ official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, disputed Oyer's account, telling ABC News the spat over Gibson's gun rights was not a factor in removal."

yeah, right.
