No knife allowed at Houston Rodeo?

#1

Post by GlockenHammer »

Okay, so I leave my handgun in the car while I go to the rodeo (hoping someone doesn't steal it). I get up to the gate for the Reliant Stadium and the guy looks at my pocket with my CRKT cliped inside and says "your knife is not allowed inside".

You have GOT to be kidding? Nobody said squat about the can of OC in my other pocket or the other weapons I had on my person, but the knife clearly visible was not allowed. I guess the gangsters are smart enough to keep theirs hidden.

WHAT A JOKE!

Years ago, I made it a personal goal to never, ever, voluntarily go anywhere that I'm treated like a criminal. I refuse to give someone money and then be treated like a felon.

I can imagine circumstances where I might have to fly for a family emergency, or be forced to travel by air as part of my job. Thus the "voluntarily" disclaimer, but so far I've kept my vow.

I guess you have not been called for jury duty in awhile then...

Above treetment of clip knives & for that matter the ones on a belt holster. I have made it a practice many yr ago to keep it standing up in back pocket beside billfold. never seen, smoother draw, just as quick opened. Yes KB I too just don't go some places for the same reason. Concerning llwatson & jury duty. I have got to be the exception to the whole system. I am 56, property owner since 22, registered voter since 21, & never been summoned. Wife has several times. Figure that one.

They don't call it a "livestock" show for nothing...

baaaaaaaaaa...

I bet theres a vendor in the "craftsee nick-knack" part of the event that are selling "illegal" blades inside...

I saw one or two during the years I used to go to the thing...Probably weeded them out to be "too contraversial" to the embience of the show in general...

/sarcasm

BTW, are they wanding people at this thing now???

I served on a jury just this past year. Jury duty isn't voluntary. ;-)

A few years ago I went the the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion for a concert.
No 30.06 sign was posted but they had a big sign listing all 'Forbidden' items.

I was asked to empty my pockets. On my keychain I had a tiny folding kinfe with a LED light built into it. It was made by Stanley Tools and I paid about $8.00 for it. The nice lady said I could check it with security and pick it up after the concert.

Well, about 30 people were lined up "checking" there forbidden camcorders, cameras, ice chests etc.

I wasn't going to wait in that line TWO TIMES for an $8.00 trinket. I took it off my keychain and tossed it in the trash can and she let us all in.

I'm just glad she didn't ask me to drop my pants, guns were on the forbidden list too!!

I just walked on in with a SmartCarry that was full.

But we were all safer that night without that 1-1/2" bladed flashlight knife to menace innocent concert goers.

It was hot that night and I sweated like a pig and for that reason alone I won't ever go back to that place.

That's my story........................... Regards, OE

I took the fam to the rodeo this past Tuesday. They were checking purses and bags, but no wands at the entrance we went through.

FWIW, I saw a bunch of pocket-clips that were obviously attached to folding knives. I even saw a dude with a pair of pliers (or cutters) in a leather belt holster.

I checked out the BBQ contest a few days before the official start of HLSR. IIRC, I left my handgun in my locked vehicle, but boarded the bus in the satellite parking lot with a folding knife & pepper spray. While walking past security, I made sure they never saw anything that interested them, and I never had any type of incident.

As or more importantly, I was dressed in such a way, via my choice of pants and footwear, where my mobility was not compromised in any way. My everyday choice in pants & footwear let me run, jump, climb chain-link fence, drive, etc, without any problem whatsoever. My "Nike defense" (a rapid exit, which is what many of you would call retreat) is always my first option anyway, at least when I am out and about in public.

While I was at the BBQ and being herded around with everyone else, I remember thinking about the concept of exit/retreat and how it is so much more valuable and important when it is made more difficult in channelized space (think security gates, stop-and-go traffic, hallways and corridors, etc). It is especially important when you are disarmed, whether partially or completely, because at that point it is pretty much your only viable option if you are threatened.

In fact, taking things further, one could argue that you retreat/exit as you (hopefully) move around and/or seek ballistic cover during a gunfight to lessen the odds of your assailant's slugs/bullets from striking you. The way I see it, "retreat" is anything you do to distance yourself from any altercation or threat, and should ideally be a part of any response to a threat, perceived or real. "Retreat" is not only legally required in many situations, but frequently makes good tactical sense.

I guess I should let someone else steer this thread back to its original topic.

Yes on the Nike defence several yr ago. At age that is way closer to 70 than 40 that defence is no longer an option. Easily overcome by any BG. They run faster than old men & especially if their old wife's are with them. If tried it will cause a definate quick trip to the ground. That makes the old man easier prey than standing & fighting. One of the members here has as a signature. Retreat is not an option. Knees don't work any more. For some of us that is way more true than humor. Even the seeking cover? Quick is out of the equasion. I have had to changed my training to include making as small a target as possible. Trusting my accuracy over BG's no practice. I can't run so stand & fight is my only option. Can't never tell, if you do you just might win. :iagree:

You can do all this after eating BBQ? I'd rather sleep.

Yes, I am aware that many folks lack the same strong exit option as I have, due to their infirmities. I hope to retain the Nike defense as long as I can by not smoking and otherwise taking care of my heart, lungs and limbs.

All you old-timers with bad knees or lungs, or otherwise lacking good exit options, I support your decision to stand your ground and blast your adversaries to oblivion. (Or at least until they are "stopped.") I sincerely hope you experience your adversaries' slugs as wild or near misses, rather than graze wounds or direct hits. (Or better yet, you surprise them with the business end of your weapon of choice, they wet their pants and do their own escape, followed by your 911 call and brief visit by Baytown or a like-minded peace officer, and all ends well.)

I have to admit I can get pretty filled up and tactically compromised at certain BBQ places that I refuse to name on a public forum. (Go ahead and call me paranoid if you like. )

In truth, I went home hungry after the HLSR BBQ contest. When I went there, every pavilion was invite-only. I had no such invitation, and the "free" BBQ they were serving up about 100 yds from the entrance did not look appetizing at all.

So you can take a concealed handgun into the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion?

When that took place, a couple of years ago, no 30.06 sign was posted. I don't know if they are 30.06 posted now.

A "No guns" sign doesn't mean anything if you have a TX CHL.
