The parallel universe
I was in Houston the other day, so I stopped by to visit my sister.
We were sitting in her living room visiting. The doorbell rang.
I asked, are you expecting anybody?
She says, no as she gets up to go to the door.
She walks right up to the door and opens it without a word.
I'm out of my chair and "draw"(out of sight of the entryway)
Bla, bla, bla,..... must be the wrong street etc.
I'm reholstering as my sister enters the living room.
She says, "oh sh.... did I almost get killed or something?"
We had the little talk about opening the door without knowing who is out side. AGAIN.
I asked her if she ever watches the Houston news.
She says, yah,but, tralala,lala, lala......
With some people it never sinks in until it's too late.
But I keep trying because she is my sister.
I'm not over reacting. I was thinking about the time she told me about calling an ad in the Greensheet for someone to weed the garden.
The guy that showed up was "really weird" according to her. He was asking her to go out with him and he kept calling her on the phone for weeks. That's just one of the stories.
I think one of us was adopted. No, it had to be me. Because my mother and my sister are just alike!!
Stay safe, OE

This is a continuing issue with me as well. My Mom lives with us Anyguns, and she used to do this until we addressed the situation.
We teach our kids to never trust strangers...do not accept rides, take candy, etc. What hapens to this caution when we mature?
Anygun

Just think what it's like when the dingbat that throws the door open all the time is your wife.....
I often come home later in the evening (around 8pm) and will find the garage door open, the door from the garage into the house open, and my wife upstairs blissfully unaware upstairs bathing the kids. When this happens my m.o. is to stealthily work my way upstairs, get right behind her, jab my finger in her back and go "bang, you're dead".....
I think it may be starting to sink in as recently I am at least finding the door from the garage into the house locked 80% of the time where it used to ALWAYS be open.
She keeps saying "that stuff doesn't happen in our neighborhood", and I keep reminding her that criminals have cars too.... I recently showed her the list of sex offenders within a 5 mile radius and I think that woke her up a bit too....

Many years ago I sold security systems. Missouri City was a very busy place for us. Plenty of burglaries in that area. You can go down to the Police Department and pay for a crime report to be pulled for your area (key map page numbers if I recall) and your wife would probably be shocked at what all goes on in the neighborhood and surrounding areas.No4Mk1 wrote:She keeps saying "that stuff doesn't happen in our neighborhood"

I have to tell a lot of my friends that too. Some hardly ever lock their doors.
They tell me, "I can see out the window if somone is coming up," and I reply, "but how often are you looking?"
It seems easier to me to just keep the door locked.
I keep my house locked up unless dh & I are both home & working in the yard.
Also, if I can keep criminals away, its just much easier than shooting them. It's just easier on me if I can inconvenience them and make them leave, rather than having to shoot them, then get the cops out there, then clean up the mess, then deal with a possible civil suit.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

My mom (87 yo) would open the door, politely, to anyone. Since another elderly woman in her neighborhood was beaten and robbed in broad daylight in her own home, Mom shouts through the closed door and keeps a 4 oz botle of Fox OC by the door. You can teach an older dog new tricks. Not quite ready for a gun in hand, but 22 yo GS with CHL and C&L Glock 17 lives wth her now.

Browse around to see crime statistics for different Houston police beats.

OverEasy, your sister sounds just like my mother. Totally clueless.
My wife and her family is actually pretty good about stuff. My dad is somewhat of an amature, but is at least pointed in the right direction. My mom just scares me.
We've started to get her better about locking the doors [uuhg

It's not that she doesn't know the risks, she's had plenty of bad experiences with crime. She's just clueless.

Yes Carlson, some of us country boys had a real hard time in 3rd grade spelling class. How do you spell paranoid?
