Added advantages to having a CHL...

#1

Post by O6nop »

I don't know for certain in every case but I am of the understanding that there are a few added advantages to having a CHL.

-Some FFL discount transfer fees if you have a CHL.
-Some pawn shops will sell handguns ONLY to CHL holders
-Purchasing a firearm can go faster on the background check if you have a CHL
-When pulled over by a PO, showing them your CHL (which you must do) tells them that you've already had an extensive background check on you and can be identified as a law abiding citizen (although I understand some LEOs are not favorable to concealed carry).

Any opinions?

Only guarantee on your list is the gun purchase going faster. Show your CHL & there is no call in for background check. The CHL # goes on the 4473, you pay, you go.
Some FFL's give discounts on transfers but is not manditory or even what I would know as any kind of "standard practice." I know of no Pawn Shop or any FFL that will sell only to CHL holders.
Stopped by LEO & showing CHL gives no special priviledges. Ask me about yesterday  A 5 minute visit w/ DPS was worth $244.00 for 16 MPH over. I have heard of some saying they thought the CHL saved them a ticket but it did not help me.
One benefit I find that you did not mention. When you do a personal buy or sell to an individual if they have a CHL, that gives you a character refference on them. I always ask. Have stated on a couple of occasions that a sale would only be to a CHL holder. Those two times I was selling a low $ gun & would not take the risk. Had many inquire on both but still have both guns.

I don't know about the added advantages. I do like the security of having my firearm with me everywhere I go, and no one would suspect I have a gun. I don't fit the profile of the average TX chl holder.

Privileges?

Longtooth-
Actually, I didn't know about the "No background check" that's great! The only reason I mentioned it was because I'm always asked if I have one. Very soon, I can say 'yes'.

Lot's of FFL's give discounts according to many of the FFL lookup websites. One guy I plan on calling in Austin is at Sprinco, $20 for transfers, $15 for CHL holders. I'll call first to verify.

To be honest, I've only seen one Pawn shop, from a chain, that posted a sign that they sold handguns only to CHL holders. I think near Lamar and Hwy 183, Austin. I figured if they did it others did. I haven't checked for a while, maybe it's gone.

Oh, I didn't mention anything about privileges from LEOs I just meant they may show some respect (apparently not in your case). I don't know the details about your ticket so I can't comment. And since I'm rarely stopped and haven't been able to show my CHL to one, I can't argue the validity. It was mentioned briefly by my CHL instructor.

Venus Pax-
That's the obvious advantage, that's why I thought there might be added advantages.

BTW, What is the profile of the average chl holder? According to DPS, it's a white male, mid 40's to mid 60's, probably 58, living in a metropolitan area. At least by taking a quick look at the demographics information DPS puts out.

O.K. I'm asking.

He probably didn't know you are a Pastor (might have cut you some slack).

Did you try this one on him: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). Oh yeah, thats a different kind of "peace maker" ;-) . Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

No, I did not tell him I was a preacher. I shy away from anything that smells like some preachers who think the world owes them a living or a pass. I was running 74 by mine 76 by his. When I went into the 60 mile zone I chose to pass instead of breaking & slowing. Been 19 yrs now since the last one. At the price of speeding tickets it will be the last one unless I don't see a sign. That was the money I had set aside for 2K rounds of bullets from Amy in August & a set up for my guitar. Frets are worn bad & when I really get aggerssive it is buzzing on B & E string playing D.

I guess if you stay concealed and don't let many people know you're licensed then there is no typical CHL holder, because no one should know you're carrying.... isn't that the point?
