You know that is really my first thought, when I first heard about the chance of campus carry for students, Since my daughter started attending Texas Tech and I have seen many pictures of parties ( beer in photos) on her myspace from just the FIRST semester.

It should be allowed for their safety, but there is an abundance of alcohol at college dorms and such, That in my opinion would make that a very dangerous situation.

Well, a CHL holder has to be 21 and must know the law. If they get caught with their gun while intoxicated it will be a terrible scar on the movement. I will make a prediction here and now that it won't happen. How many 21,22,23 year old CHL holders are in dorms at any given time? I would guess it to be not more than 100 in the entire state. Of those we are talking about the most responsible of the students, and most faculty, on the entire campus. I consider our qualification for getting a CHL far to strenuous and expensive for any person licensed to consider being irresponsible while carrying. The only arguments I can see against this is that of proper secure storage where no other person can get to it. And that, if I remember the bill correctly, it only applies to students and faculty and not to the general CHL community. Please correct me if I am wrong about that. That is my opinion.

The media seems to have the same take, but the problem with this logic is that it has no foundation. Passing the "campus carry" law will not allow every college kid to carry a gun on campus. What it will do is allow those who are licensed (and don't seem to be causing any issues) to carry while in class if they choose to do so.

There is a considerable amount of attention focused upon college kids carrying and not being responsible enough to do so. Problem is that they're already carrying in their apartment, eating diner, picking up groceries, and going to the movies. The only thing that changes is that they are able to defend themselves where they spend the majority of time - on campus.

It wasn't too long ago that I was in school and I can't recall a kegger being held on campus. Those that are held off campus are completely legal for a CHL to carry under our law, so long as they're not intoxicated. I would assume this is happening with some degree of regularity and isn't making waves.

CHL holders have demonstrated our level of responsibility over the years - regardless of age.

Despicable and insulting to the 21+ year old student. I am confident the student that has went through the process and preparation to apply for his/her CHL will be mature enough and responsible enough to buy a gun safe and secure their weapon before engaging in any extracurricular actives. Not to mention the expense they will be out in acquiring their CHL. I believe that the students that will apply will mostly come from a family with gun history and experience. They have been taught gun safety from the time they were born.

Inflammatory, but completely congruent with the mindset of the antis. I've heard one too many mothers crying that drunken teens with guns is a bad idea. One mother actually told me I should be handcuffed for letting my teenage daughter keep a rifle and ammo in her bedroom. This same mother, who said my daughter will have trouble getting dates, is probably buying beer kegs for her kids' parties so they can be cool. Responsible parenting appears to be in the eye of the beholder.
it's socially unacceptable to be ahead of your time.

They're carrying openly and they're intoxicated. Neither of those are legal for CHL even if campus carry passes. However police are exempt from both those restrictions. Therefore the guys in the cartoon must be police. QED.

I thought I saw double...

It will be interesting next week to see if there will be a counter-protest (empty holster week) to the students who walked out at UT who are opposed to the Campus Carry Bill...By the Students for Concealed Carry organization...

We live in interesting times...

Wonder if there will be a balanced cartoon in the Comical for this groups effort???

I have real mixed feelings on this. I supervised a 10 story all male residence hall, freshmen and sophmores. I also supervised Sorority Rush. I would like to assume that every college student who qualifies for and earns a CHL has the maturity to keep the booze separate from the gun 100% of the time...But after being in the college environment for 7 yrs, I got to believe that serious mistakes are going to happen.

My boss, whose dad is secret service and who tried to get in the service himself made a mistake. He got his CHL last year, had a beer at a friends house while carrying and then drove home. Had he been pulled over for some reason, handed his CHL to the LEO, LEO smells beer on his breath... And he's got a lot of issues to deal with...I can only imagine the potential accidents waiting on our college campus's...
