deranged shooter in workplace DHS wisdom

#1

Post by charlie »

I wish I knew kew how to cut and paste this pds file DHS document titled "Active Shooter-How To Respond".

I received it via email from our HR director, an NRA member who had some derisive comments about it.

It makes me feel so much better; I know you would feel better too if you read it. It deals with how to respond to a shooter in the workplace.

Among the pearls of wisdom fom the professionals at DHS :

Hide.

Run away.

Lock your door.

If none of the above are effective, you can escalate your response by:

Throwing things at the shooter.

Yelling at the shooter.

Personally, I think they left out:

Talk about his mama and make him cry.

Have a "dialog" with him and make him your friend.

This DHS brochure makes me feel so much better.

If you think I'm joking, I'm not. I'll try to figure out how to do a cut and paste on it. I can't seem to get the normal C & P to work.

EDITed to add: that might be reasonable advice for my kids.

I have a good answer for that provided by Sen. Deuell during the Concealed Carry on Campus hearings. Sen Deuell was responding to the UTA student council representative's statement that you could throw things. When Sen. Deuell asked him what he would throw that was in the room, the guy responded 'The coffee pot'. Sen Deuell replied: (See my signature line.) ;-)

I guess throwing things is better than cowering in a corner and wetting your panties. The best thing to throw, however, is lead.

So if I can't throw lead very fast, does that qualify as a disability so I can carry my medical device? You know, the thoracic perforator.

Guess I better go start loosening up that ol' pitching arm in case some bad guy comes after me in a "gun free zone" ... used to be able to hit low to mid 80s on a JUGS gun during my "glory days" about 17 years ago. Would it be allowable, under DHS "rules", for me to carry my own personal first-round draft pick and about 10 baseballs while traveling in gun free zones? Not sure how easily I could conceal a 6-foot-4-inch 23 year old with a rocket right arm. Do they make holsters for that? Or do I have to bring my own bullpen and just make that tapping motion on my right arm when the bad guy comes around?

Charlie, seriously, these are great advices up until "yelling at the shooter" part.

The first responses should definitely be running away or hide away. if absolutely no where to go, then remove your hat, face the shoot, and start talking about your kids.

Well, I trried to post the brochure following the advice. It would have worked I think except that this site advised that the file is too large. Once I got to looking at the brochure, I realized it's about 20 pages long. Most of that is artwork and pictures. Only about 1-2 pages is verbiage.

That's our tax dollars at work I guess, 1-2 pages of meat and 18 pages of colorful filler. Kinda like our govwrnment huh?

I suppose there is a way to edit out the fluff but I'm getting way beyond my level of competance here. I would be glad to email this brocure to anyone interested. Maybe someone might be inclined to edit the fluff out and publish the wording on this site.

I know I've been sarcastic, but there is some good advice here, such as "call 911" and turn off your cell phone".
Also, warning signs of a troubled employee. Gee, I think I've had some of these signs myself. I better investigate myself.

Let me know and I'll email it to you.

In my arrogant opinion DHS has no wisdom. I worked for TSA early on, and this kind of thing was circulated even back then, drawing guffaws almost to the level of micturating in ones britches, until we realized they were serious.

Way back when, I submitted an article that I proposed to send to the NRA and various gun magazines about how to travel with firearms under the new rules. I was roundly rejected by upper level management because, I was told, it could be seen as partisanship in the political realm and lead to criticism.

A couple of years later one of those managers got promoted to a national level job, and an article under his byline appeared in the American Rifleman, almost word for word the same as the one I submitted.

The booklet si not completely wrong. See this quote

"As a last resort, attempt to take the active
shooter down. When the shooter is at
close range and you cannot flee, your
chance of survival is much greater if you
try to incapacitate him/her."

But they also have gems like this one:

"Your hiding place should:
• Be out of the active shooter’s view"

Note: Yes, that was copy and paste from the pdf file. Left click where you want to start the "cut" and then drag the pointer while holding down the left mouse button until you highlight the sections you want to copy. It should be highlighted blue. Then right click on that area and select copy. Go to where you want to "paste" and right click and select "paste" .
