My wife and I and friends go to Austin occasionally to eat and have never seen (I am sure there are some) a 30.06 sign. From tid bits here and there in the Austin newspaper I don't think on the whole they are anti CHL. There is a retired Austin PD Sgt. that has a talk radio show in Austin who is very pro CHL.

Living in the Austin suburbs, I don't see much attitude regarding concealed carry in the area. Nobody seems to care or pay too much attention. Due to the high concentration of judicial, university and government meeting premises in Austin proper, a higher than normal fraction of places you might want to visit are off-limits to concealed carry. It depends on what you wish to see.

Aside from some office buildings and factories - which aren't really meant to be open to members of the general public anyway - I don't remember the last time I saw a valid PC30.06 sign in the Austin area.

A few places have "gunbusters" signs or non-compliant signs that mimic the PC30.06 requirements (for example, the proper wordage, but typewritten rather than in 1" letters) but since non-compliant signs have no legal standing, I ignore them.

Haven't had any run-ins with the local constabulary, but from what I've heard, they're not as generally antagonistic in the way some people say Houston cops are. Just follow the letter of the law and you should be OK.

We go to Austin for 3 weekends a yr (foodnetwork junkets...) I've never seen a 30.06 sign. Just don't carry on the Capitol tours!

Thanks for the replies. I am sitting in that fair city now. I arrived tonight (Sunday). I didn't have any trouble transporting my firearm on the airline. It is good to get an airline agent who is experienced and knows what to do.

My hotel isn't 30.06 posted, so that's a good start. The visually interesting restaurant Bone Daddy's is nearby. I'll see if it is posted. Gun dealer Dawson Precision isn't too far away. I hope I have time for drop in for a look-see. I'd also like to visit Red's Indoor Range.

It all depends on how things go with work. If everything falls into place, maybe I'll feel bold enough to march into the CHL office and light a fire under the application processing folks. I can see the headlines now: "CHL Holder Holds Up CHL Office." Hmm... Okay, no visits to the CHL office.

"Why not?" is right. I was there 2 weeks ago, and there was no reason not to carry on the capitol tour. In fact, at the entrance to the Senate gallery on the 3rd floor they had metal detectors set aside and turned off. Immediately to the left of the Senate gallery entrance was a door marked "this door to remain unlocked at all times", so of course I opened it to see if that was true. The door indeed was unlocked, and inside was a small room with the handicap entrance to the Senate gallery, along with the security desk and the 30.06 signs that they put in place while the Senate is in session.

So as long as you don't try to go into a 30.06-marked room while touring the capitol, you should be clear to carry.

The only time I have ever been aware of not being able to carry is actually IN the Senate or House Chambers WHILE they were actually IN SESSION. I have carried into legislators' offices, into public hearings, all around the Capitol and even the House and Senate Chambers when they were not in session. Actually, until the last couple of sessions, you could carry while they were is session. Several Members do. This one restriction is a fairly recent one.

*It would be advised NOT to advertise your CHL.
*Try to avoid the topic. The noise to signal ratio of brainwashed treehugger to Southern Conservative is extremly high in the city proper. In Williamson county its almost like the rest of Texas so you're good.
*30.036 Signs: not that many signs though, but remember there are a buttload of state, school, and federal government buildings there in the central part.

Also remember its like 104 during the day right now. Take that under advisement so you don't like, die, from the heat.

Concealed is concealed, no biggie.

Every LEO I have dealt with has had no problems with my carrying. From being slightly surprised that I carried but having a positive attitude (APD) to not giving the license more than a cursory glance, seeing that it's a CHL and handing it back to me stating "I don't need that" (Texas Ranger), every LEO I've dealt with here has been just fine.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of reasonable people in this town, and many that I would never have pegged as CHLers who carry.
