Handgun Question

Greetings,
I'm new to the board, and new to the CHL bit.
I have a question about taking the class and qualifying;
I only have a single-action revolver (I know, I know, move into the 21st century... nah) Will that in and of itself be an impediment to becoming CHL qualified?

I would definately buy or borrow a semi-auto so you will not be limited to a revolver.

Some instructers will loan a semi-automatic for qualification for a small ammo fee. It might be a goog idea to call and check.
Does anyone know why there is this limmitation with revolvers? I can't see any logic to the restrictions being so one way.

That can't be, since the two-tier CHL has existed since Day One.

It was included due to concerns that someone who passed the proficiency test with a double action revolver would not necessarily be able to safely handle a semiauto. To prevent such a person from carrying a semi, the two-tier system was included in the original CHL law.

I don't like the law (I don't even like the proficiency test), but let's face it... even a Glock is complicated compared to a revolver. There are people out there who would test with a DAO revolver (the only gun they've ever owned), then decide they need a 1911.

I agree with the advice to use a semi-auto for the qualifications, but using your Peacemaker is not prohibited and the reloading between strings is not done "on the clock." You just don't want to be limited to revolvers, or have to go to the trouble and expense to later qualify with a semi-auto and amend your CHL.

I believe that semi-automatic pistols are slightly more dangerous than revolvers.

If you open the cylinder on a revolver, there is no question that it is empty/disabled.

If you remove the magazine on a semi-automatic, there could still be a round in the chamber.

I always argue the most dangerous bullet in a semi-automatic is the first cartridge in the magazine.

That's why you don't just take the magazine out. You also lock the slide back so you can see the chamber.

EDIT: Case in point: (story of a member's experience from another forum)
True story I saw on the range:

One person is finished shooting and put his gun in the guncase behind him on the floor.
Second person tell first one that the hammer of his desert eagle is still cocked.
First one say laughing: don't worry, there is only one round left in it!(assuming it was in the mag) Then he just pull the trigger without touching anything else of the pistol.
Of course the pistol goes off, person has sore finger and yes, one bullet straight trough the fire extinguisher.
Well what could I say, after all he wasn't telling lies!

The SA revolver may be all you have, but seriously doc, think about getting a DA revolver or semi-auto for your carry piece.
