transfering/moving........

#1

Post by shooter4 »

my friend wants to know if his North Carolina CCW will transfer to Texas or will he have to re-register and take any Texas classes. Also is the NRA basic pistol class certification valid for a Texas CCW permit even though it was given in another state??? He has taken the NRA class from me when he lived in Florida and it was good for the permit down here.

CHL's don't "transfer" like a DL does. He will have to go to the class to get a TX CHL, I think texas gives reciprocity to NC, so he should be able to carry on that license.

Only the officially sanctioned Texas CHL class satisfies the training requirement. And the class must be taken in Texas.

The out of state license is good for 30 days after establishing residency in Texas. He can come to Texas on a visit, and take the class, and apply for a license before he moves, so there would be no gap in his carry licensing.

Are we talking military transfer here? If so, will Texas become his state of residence? The whole time I was stationed in CA, Texas was still my state of residence. If NC remains his state of residence he shouldn't have to change his DL or CHL/CCW (whatever it is in NC).

Oh well. In that case he has to go through the whole thing. Except for the DL, though. When I first moved to Texas in 1984, all I had to do for my DL (car and motorcycle) was take the written tests. I did not have to take the driving test. I was 18y and had a NY license. Back then the NY license did not have a picture and the "number" was about 16 characters long with numbers and letters.

Once your friend moves to Texas and gets a Texas drivers license then I believe he can no longer carry on his North Carolina license because I don't bnelieve it is valid once you turn your NC license in when you get your TX license. At least that is what a North Carolina sherrif told me. The sherrifs are the ones who issue carry licenses in North Carolina.

30 days is the amount of time you have to legally establish residency if you move to Texas. However, NC does not issue non-resident licenses, so the minute he changes his NC residency to Texas his NC license becomes invalid.
