Confused About Renewal

#1

Post by xdtom40 »

Let me preface this by saying that I do not have my renewal packet in front of me to see if this answer is in there or not.

My CHL expired in 10/2009 and before that I paid the $70 and DPS mailed me the packet like August or so. That is where I didn't do anything further. I am wanting to renew now and take the renewal course, but am confused on how long I have to renew it. On-line looking at the CHL handbook, I swore it said that you have 6 months to renew, but I emailed DPS CHL section and Simone wrote back, "You have one year from the time you apply online to complete the application and mail it back to us for processing."

So I don't know which it is, 6 months or 1 yr? I want to sign up to take a course, but don't know I can sign up for a renewal or not?

Thanks for any help!

I think you can renew up to 6-months BEFORE your license expires. You have up to one year to renew AFTER you pay & get the packet. I also believe if you renew after 1-year AFTER your license expires, you need to take the full course again (and pay the full fee).

xdtom40, both of your dates have relevance. I am 99% certain:
You can renew for one year after expiration of your license.
You can renew for six month prior to expiration.

We'll see some quick responses here. I'm only 99% because things do change.
Good luck. You have read you no longer need new fingerprints or pictures for renewals and it's all online but the training now?

Edit:sjfcontrol is a quicker type-er; might be a quicker draw too!!

Seriously? When did they change this? (Not that I'm complaining.)

I'm confused if it is all on line now. Do you still need to send in notarized affidavits that comes in the packet.? Anyone have a sample of the online application? Thanks, I don't have any changes to make from the last app.

Quoted from Mr.Cotton on May 13, 2010...

"Renewal applications:

Applicants who apply online for renewal will be presented with a checklist that includes any supplemental items they need to send to DPS to process their renewal. As most folks already know, DPS no longer requires photos (for in-state applicants) or fingerprints for any applicant on renewal, so for the majority of applicants they will only be sending in the CHL-100—and then only if they are in a renewal period that requires them to take the renewal course."

I had the old renewal packet and held it to send in after May 1 when new prints and pictures would not be needed. I had already had my notarized forms done with a class earlier. Now the forms are online without the need to take them to a Notorary (I understand).

So, if you send in an old printed packet you already have you likely need to send printed notorized forms that came in it. If you apply NOW for a renewal online the forms will be there for you to complete.
