CHL and picking your kids from school

I have recently got my CHL and I'm trying to male sure I don't make any illegal carrying.

Here's the issue. I carry every day with me. I also pick up my son from school. Mostly via car pool but sometimes I will walk up and pick him from where they have the kids waiting for the car pool.

The school has a 30.06 sign posted at the door.

If I carry on me but stay in the car in the car pool lane. Is that legal?
If I put the gun in the glove compartment/trunk and park on school property. Is that legal?

A school doesn't need to post a 30.06, but from what I was told as long as you don't cross the threshold into the building, you can carry all you want. (I live next to an elementary school and asked the specific question for that reason)

According to DPS as long as you are in your car or standing on the pavement you are OK. They told us at the instructor's school as long as you don't go inside the building or step on the grass you were legal. I would leave it locked in the car if I was getting out to get my child. Locked in the car is OK if going for a conference etc.

I don't recall a distance requirement. I think you may be referring to before the laws were changed regarding Gun-Free zones.

If you stay in the car you have no problem. The same would be true for the sidewalk.
JMO but I would stay in the car and avoid the possible hulabaloo that could be caused whether
you turn out right or wrong, especially with your child there.

Besides, the AC would feel great. 107 here today.

The Federal Gun-Free School Zone law says you cannot have a firearm within 1000 feet of the premises of a school. It also has certain exceptions to that law, including that you have a carry license issued to you be the state in which you reside. So, it does not apply to Texas resident CHL holders.

I agree that staying in the car is the best option however, sometimes you have to get out of the car for whatever reason. Sometimes I get there early and prefer to walk to where they have the kids waiting and pick up my son to save time.

As long as the school is a public school, you are able to carry when picking your child up. The premises of the school is off limits - premises being defined as the building, or portion of the building.

If the school is private, the 30.06 sign is valid. Depending on the location of the sign (parking lot for example) the property could be off limits for you.

So, if I understand correctly, the only limitation is actually going into the school building. Picking at the carpool lane is fine and also parking and walking up to the front door and picking my son from there (without going inside) is fine. Right?
