I am moving to California (don't get me started),

1. Anybody know if I have to register my handgun when I get there?
2. I am thinking about buying another pistol here in Houston before I leave. Is there a waiting period if one is a CHL holder? I leave on Wed, today is Sun.
3. Do I get to keep the TX CHL even if I move?
4. How long before I have to notify DPS that I have left the state?

There is no waiting period in Texas to buy a gun. You have 30 days to notify DPS of an address change. I believe that you can keep your TX CHL until it expires. Of course it is not recognized in California so you won't be able to carry there.

True, if you will be buying one, then moving across the border there, get one that already complies.
Also, watch out for magazines which hold "too many" cartridges & might be illegal in that country.
Some guns of the same model are compliant versus non-compliant Like a kahr PM9 I think comes with or without a manual thumb safety, though I'm not sure that's the reason, some guns had added safeties so they could sell n CA.

I dunno California laws, but my prayers are with you, be careful crossing the border. Write when you can

Just moved from california.

All incoming handguns must be registered within 30 days
Handguns must be on the approved roster
No mags over 10 rds. High capacity mags may be kept but must be completely disassembled
Make sure any long guns are not considered "assault weapons" as Kalifornia has its own ban that has not expired

Kalifornia gun laws are a frightful mess. You can be arrested for carrying concealed or open on your property if its not fenced in for instance.
No mail order ammo starting soon.
Trying to require long arm registration.
10 day wait and one gun a month.
No new purchases without proof of CA DOJ approved storage

Normally you can, but like TAM said, moving to Kalistan may be evidence of a disqualifying mental illness.

You guys crack me up.

The place is soooooo different from when I grew up there. Born & raised. An example of change : (1) We used to ride horses in Orange County, I mean like between the rows of trees in the orange groves. Now it's all built up and they have TV shows about Orange County Housewives. (2) We used to call it "fog" when I was a kid, now they call it "the marine layer." How friggin' snobby can you get? (3) We used to go hunting up north of L.A., now it's all built up. (4) When I lived in L.A. proper we could go dirt-biking up in the Hollywood Hills, now banned of course. (5) Not only that, you could hike up to the hills and look over the back and see cows grazing down in the San Fernando Valley. (6) Nobody hung out at Venice Beach. It was always empty, now full of wackos. "Muscle Beach" was actually next to the Santa Monica Beach pier, not at Venice Beach. Anyhow, I'll be in the Santa Barbara area, and that place is really different now too. They went all Beverly Hills like.

Worst thing I noticed out there is not just the Leftiness of the place, but the deep anger that seems to be festering in people. Not the laid back and open place of my youth.

As long as you have steady employment and a decent salary the central coast is still a good place to live. It has changed a lot since my days at UCSB. It will definitely be different than Houston. In the summer you might have to wear a windbreaker in the morning to fight off the chill of the "marine layer".
The bad part is it isn't Texas so you won't be able to carry your sidearm underneath.

Agreed! And also on the chill. Just drove my Mustang Bullitt out there a couple of weeks ago and it was really chilly. Was there in August, also chilly. Beautiful coastal area from SLO down to SB hasn't changed much, and Morro Bay is still as I remember it.

Where in California are you moving?

Sure, the unheeled attitude toward guns is rather lame, but there's plenty good about the area, too. Depending on where you're moving to, the weather can be absolutely heavenly. Be sure and see Yosemite before you leave the state again.

LA and the Bay Area are the liberal meccas. It's nowhere near as bad as the folks here make it out to be, except for the high taxes.

The central valley has hotter weather, but the closer to the delta you get, the better the weather gets. Most of the cities in the central valley are less liberal, except for Davis, which is a very liberal city, but very charming, too.

You can always get a CCW anywhere in california, as long as you want to bribe the sheriff. Going rate 10 years ago was about a $10,000 donation to the sheriff's re-election fund (Alameda county, at least)

As much as I hate to admit it, I miss California terribly. I visit whenever I can, but probably wont move back anytime soon, unless I can find me a wife out there that can make what I can make, and the two of us could afford a nice house together.

In Placer county, where I have a better chance of getting a CCW...

All in all, it's not so much worse, but very different. Embrace the chance to experience it. You might learn something. (I sure did when I left, and moved here.)
