Jones Hall CHL ?

#1

Post by Joel »

Several family members and I will be attending an event at Jones Hall this week. Is Jones Hall correctly posted? Not worried about being in the hall but the trip to and from the car. I've done a search but could not find recent information regarding carry at Jones Hall

Thanks.

Jones Hall is owned by the City of Houston.

Have a safe trip.

I haven't been there in years, but I don't remember seeing an signage then. Also, it looks like it's owned by the City of Houston: http://www.houstontx.gov/joneshall/index.htm

EDIT: Jim beat me to it. Anyway, have fun there :tiphat:

Just to be sure I'm understanding correctly, a city owned facility, such as Jones Hall, cannot legally post a 30.06 sign...correct?

The city owned library in Baytown has a sign prominently displayed on the entrance doors. I presume their sign to be unenforceable.

Thanks,
Joel

PC 30.06 says that the law does not apply to premises owned (or leased) by a government body. In other words, a holder of a CHL cannot be charged with criminal trespass for having a handgun on city property.

The only places where a 30.06 sign is legally enforceable on government property are meetings and possibly hospitals owned by a government body.

The City of Houston got the memo on this years ago, when they were trying to prohibit carry by CHL holders in City Hall and the airports.

In any case, Jones Hall comes up on this forum about once a year, and no one has reported signage there.

Reportedly, they still have some airports (I think IAH) improperly posted and I believe a Forum contributor has reported that certain LEO's consider it valid. They (LEO) are wrong, but just saying what I heard.

A manager at IAH was on TV a year or two ago saying that it was illegal to have "a gun" at the airport.

This is obviously false, not only in light of PC 30.06. It is completely legal under state and federal law to check weapons in baggage. To do so, you must bring them into the airport.

Hobby has no such signage. I haven't been to IAH for years. (I have come to loathe flying.)

If you trip over the dog and run into an ignorant cop, you are going to have problems. We have seen it many times in this forum.

I have been through IAH several times with a gun and have never seen any signage.

For the OP. Jones hall is not posted (not that it would be valid), so no problem.

I was at Jones Hall for the Smokey Robinson show last night 2.1.13. There was no signage posted and I had no problems carrying there. :tiphat:

Was at jones hall last weekend to see Stomp. Great show and had no problems. Not posted regardless. Parked across the street. Easy in and easy out.

The surrounding area of Jones Hall at night - very scary. Underground parking, even more so.

I know. I had an office on the 56th floor of what used to be Texas Commerce Tower located directly across the street from Jones Hall.

In fact, that whole area was a bit scary during the daylight hours.

Many times, walking to a nearby restaurant for lunch would be to walk a gauntlet of begging winos and other assorted lowlifes. One of my lunch pals had to deck one super aggressive/demanding money bum.
