Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
...or LEO contact where he asked for your ID? I've only had two...one where I'd failed to use turn signal and had 2 of 3 brake lights out...he took no action on the gun (OR the ticket, thank God)...and one where I'd taken a gun from a young man after he accidentally fired it in his pocket in a Waffle House...gave the officer my Lic/CHL when he asked for my ID for the report...his response was "He's lucky you didn't shoot him"...
...I've heard/read everything from the officer's handling the gun, discussing it, and complimenting the CHL about it to unloading it and throwing it and the bullets in the back seat to locking it in the trunk...what are y'all's experiences on this???

Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
Wife has been stopped twice since getting her CHL.
Once for switching lanes with no turn signal coming out of a one lane to two construction area by a Highway Patrol officer that looked like he just graduated high school. Was a bull stop, this was in Highland Park in Dallas for those of you in the area. Not until after he gave her the ticket did he asks about if she was carrying. Which she was! He told her he normally disarms his stops and places it on the hood. I think it must have been his first day or something.
Second time was even more interesting. She got stopped for passing in the suicide lane while trying to come get me so we could pick my son up to take him to the doctor (backflip to show off for the girls in the shallow end didn't go so well and face planted, a lot of blood but nothing major we found out once we got there) This stop was by a good old boy county Sherriff. Took the license and CHL and asks if she's carrying. Again, of course! Asks what it is, where is it at, please show me, nice gun, ok you know why I stopped you? Let’s her off after telling the story of my son, don’t know if it was because of the CHL or a crying woman.
Me, haven’t been stopped since in 5 years. (We need a knock on wood smiley!)

Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
I've had one ticket in about the last 30 years and only been stopped 3 or 4 times. I must be some kind of awesome driver. Seriously, I don't speed hardly ever. If I'm on an interstate and everyone else is going 85 I do too though. Safety in numbers, it usually works. I'm lookin for that wood to knock on too.
Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
...any stops since you got your CHL?
Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
No, a friend that took the class with me got stopped by DPS in Alvin on his way to work in the morning. DPS asked if he had the gun on his person and he said no I'm going to work and can't carry in the plant, but it's in the console. Cop still wanted to pat him down on the side of the road while all the people that worked for my friend drove by. Seemed a little much to me. But no, I've been lucky, and careful. Seems like you always hear it's DPS.

Stopped once by a Constable. I won't go into details. When he asked for ID, I handed him my DL and CHL. He looked at it a second, then handed the CHL back and said "I don't need this." He walked behind the car, checked for warrants, then returned with a warning. I wished him a good day and was back on my way.

Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
Had my CHL since ’96, been stopped three times.
1. Speeding (5 mph over), cursory look at CHL and DL…quickly handed both back, verbal warning, on my way.
2. No front license plate, cursory look at CHL and DL…quickly handed both back, verbal warning, on my way.
3. Officer said he THOUGHT I was someone else….never looked at either license…apologized for inconvenience, on my way.
I’ve had only two tickets in over 40 yrs. of driving (last one was about 30 yrs. ago) and NO accidents that were MY fault. One of those two tickets was bogus and I won in court!

Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
Due to work, hunting, and other factors I have a number of encounters with LEOs. I will mention the four most interesting ones:
First time was when I learned my speedometer need calibration. it was 4 mph slow. When the State Trooper approached I opened the right door for him (didn't want to mess with manually rolling the window down), handed him DL and CHL and helped him train a new trooper. The most interesting thing out of the stop was when he told the new trooper "It's kinda like professional courtesy, that whole an armed society is a polite one. They get warnings unless its something serious, then we have to come down harder on 'em for it."
The second time was work related With the City PD (It was after hours and something came up that needed them and me). When they arrived I handed the senior officer my CHL and DL, he tells me "You don't need to give me that one unless your carrying." I then told him "I am" which got a response of "Where and how..." At this point I told him where they were and how I was carrying them. The senior officer still did not believe me until I agreed to let him verify at least one of my weapons was on me.
The third time was due to seeing a suspicious vehicle parked in an unusual location where I work after hours as I was driving by, so I called it in to the PD. One of the officers who I personally know arrived with the others to check it out (slow night for them). One of the other officers asked for my ID, and before I could get it for him my friend tells him "Don't worry about it, his info is in master names already." He then turns to me and asks "So what are you carrying?" At which point the whole encounter turned into a discussion on who carries what. I felt like the odd man out with my Kimber Pro Covert II and with all of them carrying Kimber Eclipse IIs.
The fourth time I was in a different city and witnessed an accident. The officer that approached me asked for ID, I offered him both my CHL and DL together and he just takes the DL without taking the CHL and says "Keep that one, I've seen enough of it to know what it is." He took my info down and asked me what I saw.

How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

Only once, for an expired inspection sticker. Showed both IDs. Cop asked if I was carrying, I said yes. He said where is it, and I pointed to that part of my body. He says to keep my hands away from there and goes back to his car. Comes back a minute later and hands me the ticket and asks me to sign it. No fuss, no muss.

Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
Technically, twice.
First time was with an animal control officer. He was driving a truck with very similar painting as my local LEOs. I offered the CHL as a courtesy (weapon was in my car, I was 15 feet outside of it in my driveway holding my escapee dog). He asked if I intended to use it, I laughed it off and said, "Absolutely not, Sir." My dog had a case of mistaken identity, it all worked out in the end.
Secondly, I was dropping off two lady friends, with my male friend in the front passenger seat, and a female deputy inquired as to my presence in an empty church parking lot on a Friday. I was waiting on their ride to pick them up. I handed her my TXDL, CHL, and insurance. It took her a minute to figure out that I didn't give her both my and my male friend's TXDLs. As soon as she realized it was a CHL, she asked, "Where is the weapon?" Accompanied by gasps of shock and awe by the females in my vehicle. I told her, "12 o' clock." She stared blankly at me until I clarified, "In my lap, under my shorts." She asked my friend and me to step out of the vehicle, and insisted that I keep my hands on my head. Her explanation was something along the lines of, "We don't mess around with people who have guns." After hanging out with her for a bit, I mentioned that my arms were getting tired, and asked if there was any other position that would work for her. She conceded to letting me cross me arms over my chest. I did mention that she was carrying a weapon and that fact didn't bother me at all. Finally the girls' ride showed up, everything was resolved, and we were allowed to leave the scene. I was never disarmed, and I fought the urge to ask the female LEO for her phone number.
I have had several contacts with LEOs where they did not request my ID. All of those went smoothly.

Re: Your Experience with CHL and Traffic Stop ...
If purely an issue of CHL, a pat down doesn't make any sense.... If he finds a gun, so what? Something else going on in that stop to cause the LEO to want to do a search of his person. The CHL was just an excuse... IMHO.glbedd53 wrote:No, a friend that took the class with me got stopped by DPS in Alvin on his way to work in the morning.
