Are stores required to accept/cash third party checks?

People who can't get a DL can get a Texas Identification Card but I don't think that not cashing a check without a DL would be a protected form of discrimination.

If my bank, Bank of the West, accepts it as valid ID, then as far as I'm concerned, it's valid ID.

I would've asked to speak to his supervisor.

If a chl is valid ID, why do we have to carry a DL or ID with the CHL?

Because a Concealed Handgun License doesn't let you drive.

...wait'll they figure out how much money they'll save to make the CHL an endorsement on the DL...and still charge the same fees...

Would be great if they added it as an endorsement on DL. Fewer renewal dates to keep track of. I was in Walmart buying ammo and the lady asked for an ID but she was curious why her register came up requesting an ID. For the fun of it I showed the CHL.

Doesn't matter if you're driving, doesn't matter if you can't drive at all, you still have to carry ID or DL with your CHL plastic if you're carrying.

Oh? I'd missed that bit. I see your point now.

Because some bean counter in the legislature or DPS decided it to be like that, and everyone went along. The CHL is a state issued photo ID. If someone didn't accept my CHL, or even my TCLEOSE commission card (another state issued photo ID), then I would be speaking to a supervisor and most likely leaving that place.

Another fun fact:

If a store asks you for ID on a credit card purchase, you do not have to show it to them. If they refuse the sale, they are breaching their merchant card contract. Although I have never tested this theory, I am sure it would end up causing a scene. Requiring a minimum purchase for credit card purchases is also again contract.

Same for cash. But the OP was trying to cash his paycheck.

This is both true and false. Both MasterCard and Visa (see below for links) have provisions in their merchant agreements that prohibit POS locations from requiring consumers to show ID. Discover and American Express do not have any such provisions. And in the case of both MasterCard and Visa, you can complain, but neither company has any method for disciplining offending merchants.

Also, Merchants can (and in some cases are required by law) ask you to show ID for other purchases such as for alcohol, tobacco, and firearms.

I rarely show ID anymore when using my credit cards. And I rarely ever get asked for ID. On those few occasions I do get asked (and alcohol or firearms are not involved), I refuse. They usually complete the sale anyway. When they won't, I just walk away.
