Stops 2 Tickets 0 since my CHL

Stopped this time doing 73 in a 55.

The officer did not ask about whether I was carrying. He could not have been nicer, even before he said he was not writing a ticket and to be more careful and watch the speed limit.

Which I will do.

Don't count on your CHL to get you out of tickets. I was stooped twice in the year prior to getting my CHL. Both times, warnings. Been stopped once since I got my CHL. Got a ticket.The lady officer that stopped me could not have been nicer and not at all treatened by my being armed, but she still wrote me up.

Got stopped about a year ago for not making a 100 percent complete stop at a stop sign. Very polite and all business police officer. Thanked me for showing my CHL and then wrote my ticket. Why do some people think a CHL is a get out of ticket card ? I don't understand that logic.

There are a lot of threads in the LEO Encounters forum where people stopped by officers did not get tickets. There are many more instances of people getting off with a polite warning than those of people getting a ticket. No, I sure would not expect my CHL is going to impress any officer that stops me, but I hope (at least) he can intuit that I am not one of the bad guys. If I got stopped for something that could earn me a ticket, I would not blink twice at getting written for it...and then I would come here and make a thread about it.

a good friend of mine would get stopped and ticketed 2-3 times a years. since he got his chl all he's gotten was warnings. still gets stopped.

i've been pulled over twice before I had a CHL, while I lived in California, while being a teenager, and while driving a early 80's import coupe... both times I just got treated rudely but no ticket. 11 years of driving and no tickets so far.

Some people might disagree, but if all your license and paperwork is up to date, and you look and act like a decent member of society... I think your percentages of not getting a ticket go up. Being nice and have a good attitude can't hurt.

I try to focus on not getting into a position to get ticketed in the first place. ;)

But seriously, the only time I ever get out of a ticket is when my girlfriend is in the car with me. When she is there, I always get a warning.

Otherwise, I get tickets, period, CHL or not.

You can't apply this every time at every incident and every officer is different - but I think the biggest controllable variable (after you are pulled over) is your attitude toward the police officer. Folks with CHL's might find themselves getting more warnings, but if so, I think it is only because they start off very polite and respectful because of the CHL and the weapon.

I have been driving for 27? years now - I think? (driving age was 15 in Louisiana). Even when I was a teenager and got pulled over doing some really stupid things, I almost always got warnings. In all of my driving years, I would guess that 80% of the times I have gotten pulled over, I got a warning. Even when I was 17 and driving a red Alpha Romeo Spider (granted a 20 year old one), I would usually get warnings.

But I have always been extremely respectful during a stop. My parents raised me to say 'sir' - something I still do today even when talking with 'youngins' in positions of authority. It is so ingrained in my very being - that I just can't break it. It made Marine Corps boot camp a breeze - at least from that aspect - I had no problems yelling 'Sir Yes Sir'. (Even though I hate being called sir as I have gotten older - I tolerate it because I know it is the right thing to do - lol.)

I remember riding with a friend of mine in High School. He was doing some stupid things (passing on the right shoulder) in Humble and got pulled over. Now, he might have gotten a ticket anyway, but I remember being totally blown away by his attitude toward the LEO. The LEO was chewing him pretty good, but I could not believe the attitude he giving back - arguing and raising his voice. (He was a spoiled rich kid - my parents would have tarred and feathered me if I ever took that tone with them.)

So anyway, my theory is that the CHL (and the weapon) starts the tone of the conversation with the officer in the right direction - thereby lowering the ticket rate.

The best way to avoid a ticket?

Don't do anything that warrants a ticket.

Seriously.

I've been drivin' for over 40 years and have earned three tickets during that time: two for speeding, one for (questionably) running a stop sign.

The avoidance concept ain't that difficult here...

That's why I said "the biggest controllable variable (after you are pulled over)". By that point, having a good respectful attitude is all you have left. But the absolute biggest variable is good driving behavior.

Like you, I've been driving over 40 years and have 3 tickets (2 speeding, 1 red light) in that time. I earned all of them. I've been stopped 3 times in the last 22 years (speeding, license plate not visible and reckless driving) and did not get a citation or even a written warning on any of them. I've had no stops since getting my CHL.

While I actively drive to avoid tickets, I think that both "the luck of the draw" and local "revenue enhancement" might play a bigger part in whether I get stopped or not than my actual driving. There is no question that I do things every time that I get behind the wheel for which I could receive a citation, if all of the traffic laws were being enforced. Yesterday, I switched lanes in the last few feet before an intersection (I was trying to shake a tailgaiter) and could have been cited for that.

In our Town, some speed limits are set artificially low and speed limit changes are set up in a way that, if you don't see what happens to others at that point, you could easily get stopped there, too. As careful as I try to be, the speed limit in unfamiliar areas are easy to miss if you are having to spend your time avoiding those texting or talking on the phone while driving, as seems to be more and more the case.

That works even better and is even easier for real crimes. I can see someone accidentally driving 62 in a 60 zone more than I can see someone accidentally robbing a bank or stealing a car. I think your advice is the perfect answer to the people who aski about eligibility for a CHL with a criminal record.
