does MY renewal require CHL-100?

#1

Post by plarkinjr »

So, my CHL expires in October this year. I've renewed it at least twice that I can recall. I've completed the online payment stuff, and the checklist says to include the CHL-100 Form, but it also says in the NOTES that its only required every 10 years after the 2nd renewal, and (or?) course isnt required on 3rd renewal if it was taken on the 2nd. Very confusing. I *THINK* I don't need to take it, but is there a way to confirm for sure? I've tried calling austin 512.424.7293 but its always a busy signal. Should I just mail in what I believe I need?

Also, it says to mail with ALL items listed below, but one of them isnt an item at all... the part about them attempting to use existing photo and prints... so how do I mail THAT in? (I know, I'm picking nits here, but this stands as a logical example of why I might not have to send in the CHL-100 form, despite it being listed on the checklist).

If this is your third renewal you don't need the CHL100 If it is your third license then you need the CHL100. Do you remember when you first got your license? If it has been over 12 years ago then you are probably OK without the CHL 100.

There is an Email form at the bottom of THIS PAGE where you can make inquiries.

Photos and prints are not needed for renewals unless the ones on file won't work. In that case, DPS will notify you.

Thanks for replying.... this is AT LEAST my 3rd renewal. I started filling out their EMAIL form when the phone finally rang thru to Austin. The guy looked up my stuff and said I didn't need to take the course, but would next time (2016). The checklist (and nothing else) is now in the mail headed that way.

Thanks again, and thank you MoJo for your service!

This is another one of those things that just makes no sense from a business perspective. DPS should be able to indicate on the checklist whether the class is needed. I suspect there was a lack of thorough requirements development when they developed the online app.

I'm at a loss how it could possibly be a fourth renewal, assuming we're talking about a Texas CHL. :headscratch

Those that got CHL as soon as it passed are there.
Some were issued for only 2 yrs. All of those are there.
96 class
98 renew
03 renew
08 renew

Unless I'm mistaken, someone who renewed in 2008 should have their next renewal in 2013, not this year.

You are correct! LT wasn't saying someone who renewed in '08 needed to renew this year it was an example of how the renewal calendar works.

I wish they would give an option for a 10 year license like Oklahoma has...

I wish they didn't require a license like Arizona.
