A badly handled 3 am incident pre chl

Back in 2002 my family(wife and 2 young daughters) were temporarily living in Converse Tx while waiting for our new house to be move in ready. The neighborhood (Camelot II) was off Windcrest in a bad part of town, and we were living in a rental duplex provided free from our realtor who represented us in the home purchase . My wife and I worked as nurses at the same nursing home a few blocks down the road. I worked 3-11 and she worked 11p-7a so we could watch the kids without having to pay for daycare. There had been 2 attempted house burglaries while we weren't home so we were looking to move asap. One night while I was home with my daughters and the wife was at work there was a knock at the door at 3 in the morning. I grabbed my SW99 .40 and quietly looked through the peephole. To my surprise there was a 20 something blond girl about 9 months pregnant standing there. I yelled through the door and asked "what do you want?" She proceeded to tell me her car broke down and nobody would help her or answer their door. She asked if I could let her in , and said if I was uncomfortable I could cover her with a gun Well I naively opened the door and told her to come in while holding my pistol at low ready with one in the chamber. I immediately shut the door and locked it behind her, and noticed a couple of things. 1. She didn't appear to be scared or uncomfortable and I was holding a pistol and only wearing boxers 2. Her appearance/ clothes were "ghetto" for lack of a better word. She was wearing a large coat asit was winter and cold outside. So I told her to take off her coat and have a seat on the couch. She proceeded to tell me she had broke down in the neighborhood and was tired and thirsty and needed help. She asked for a glass of water and asked if she could have a smoke. I instructed her to get a glass and pour herself a glass of water and asked why she was smoking if she was pregnant. She went on to tell me her "Doctor" told her it was ok to smoke while pregnant as long as she smoked "light" cigarettes. I called my wife and told her what was going on and asked her to come home and watch the kids so I could give this girl a ride home. I warned her to approach carefully and drive away if she saw anybody outside. When my wife got home I handed her the loaded pistol, got dressed and told her not to answer the door or let anybody in until I got back. While driving this girl home I didn't see a broken down vehicle, and she asked me for money before dropping her off in front of a trailer park. I got home safe and my wife returned to work and everything ended up ok that night.
Now that I am older and have my chl and more situational awareness I realize what a fool I was to open the door, and how badly I mishandled situation. At the time I didn't know what section 8 housing was, and didn't realize how much drug activity and crime happens in that area. A couple years later a kid was shot and killed in the middle of the day in the alley behind that duplex/house.I figure the girl was probably a prostitute and likely a drug user and god knows what else. She was probably casing the house for a boyfriend waiting outside or setting me up for a home invasion type situation, or at the very least trying to get away from police or escaping from some other sketchy situation. I am lucky nothing bad happened and realize how lucky I am that God was watching out for my family that night. I realize I made multiple bad decisions that night and handled the situation like a clueless idiot. The only thing I did right that night was having my weapon with me and ready and not dropping my guard completely just because the pregnant young girl didn't appear to be a threat. I would like to hear feedback and would like to know if anybody else has had a similar experience before getting their chl. Feel free to critique the incident but please don't be too harsh lol...

I travel a lot and have had enough experiences to write a book or two.

In the past year I have been approached in the parking lot at a Luby's & in a lumber yard. Both gals needing money for a "gallon of gas" with promise to pay me back when they get home. One was even wearing a fast food restaurant uniform. Legit? Dont know, but I figured at least one was scamming.

The funniest happened one Sun morning around 10 AM long time ago. I was coming home from the marina and saw a gal in a white dress & high heels stumbling down a barren stretch of hwy. I immediately got the impression that she was coming from or going to church & so I stopped; and boy was I wrong! Before I could snap she was sitting next to me. She was big time bra-less, her dress was grass stained, her make up smeared, and her hosiery abraded. She was sitting with her legs askew, knees up, and the dress was way too short for that position. I am not a prude, but boys I gotta tell ya, I was afraid to look at her & yet, afraid not to keep an eye on her!

She said her battery was messed up and needed to get to a phone (before cell phones were common). As I drove she grabbed the rear view mirror and twisted it so she could check herself out. She then reached in the floor board car caddy and grabbed the entire pack of Wriggley's. She then reached over and gave me a playful shoulder scratch and asked if I was married. I said OH YES, VERY MUCH. She then asked if I messed around and I said, "OH NO, I WOULD NEVER EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! She then said, let me out at this store... can you lend me $5.00? I said sorry, I am broke.

My biggest fear was either getting in a car wreck, or getting arrested with this pork chop in my car....or making her mad and she start screaming that I ripped her off for services rendered. I dont think anyone would have believed my story....and I was dern sure I didnt want to have to face my wife and explain anything pertaining to this.

You got a valuable life lesson. I get approached a lot for a couple of dollars for gas. What they don't realize is I frequent the sme places and they're always there, so no go. I did have a young woman ask to use my cell phone to call for a ride outside a Walgreens a while back. She told me she had been dropped off at the River Oaks Imaging facility earlier and her ride home never showed up. She had an infant with her, so I didn't think she was a grab and run threat so I dialed the phone number and handed her the phone. By the conversation I could tell she was not getting any help. She handed me the phone and asked if there were any shelters near by where she could get some formula for the baby. I didn't know of any, so I took her inside, gave her the money to buy the formula and watched her buy it. I didn't have enough money with me to get her a cab so I give her what I had left in my wallet (about six or seven bucks) and some change for a phone call and then had to leave. I told her the police might be able to help her. Have no idea if she made it home.

Good job Puma. I think you handled it well. I would too have given her all I could.

BTW one of the currencies of the parasitic community is baby formula & laundry detergent. It can be purchased with food stamps & turned very quickly for cash.
