Academy Sending A Certified Letter

I bought a cricket for my kid a few weeks ago and they were exceedingly through in making sure everything was done and done a certain way then had the manager come and check again and then walk me out with it. I wonder what would happen if you declined to go back to the store maybe they should send someone to your house on their dime instead on inconveniencing you.

Then the BATFE would come rolling down your street in a military type vehicle with agents in full SWAT gear hanging off of each side of the vehicle and a couple on the back. Then kick your door down and round up all family members and hold them in handcuffs, all while pointing a gun at you forcing you to complete the paperwork.

I got a phone call and letter too. It appears they got audited by the government and need to correct forms that didn't meet standard. In my case, one of my "no" check marks missed the box. While the intent was clear I didn't literally check the box. I went in and fixed it. Took less than 5 minutes and I did it when I was driving by so I didn't go out of my way. No big deal and not really worth trying to blackmail them into giving you free stuff. Should it have been caught at time of sale? Yes. Mistakes happen.

I bought a lower receiver and my friend who is the FFL I use forgot to enter it into his bound book. ATF gave him a week to get it right or else. I asked him what they meant by "or else" and he said it starts with a J and rimes with hail. Those guys don't mess around.

Never had an issue with the 4473. However, when I was stationed in California, a sporting goods store where I had purchased a Remington Model 870 called and told me I would have to return the shotgun to them because of a paperwork issue. In California, you have to be a resident of the state to purchase any firearm there...I had a Texas DL. They made copies of my military ID, Texas DL, and documents to prove that I was living in and stationed in California, which is in accordance with California law. I had purchased other firearms through other FFLs in California and never had a problem. Turns out that one of the California State forms was filled out incorrectly (by THEM). And that made the whole transaction null and void. They wanted me to bring it back, but I made them come to my house and get the thing as it was an hour drive to the store where I bought it. They refunded my money and gave me a $25 gift card. They said they actually changed company policy because of what happened to me (by policy I took it to mean how they train their employees) so that any other military folks wouldn't have problems. They were very apologetic and all, but it sure was annoying to the nth degree.

I hope you had the chance to put about 200 rounds of magnum loads through it before they came and got it.

It's not a matter of blackmailing them. The OP is investing time, effort, and expense (fuel) to provide Academy with the service of helping them correct their paperwork. So it's not blackmail; it's compensation.

But now curiosity overcomes me. What would happen if OP no linger lived nearby?

Threats and intimidation over minor technical oversights by a government agency. Meanwhile they let firearms "walk" across the border without any oversight at all.

I had that happen about a year ago (although I don't think it was sent certified). For as long as it takes them to do the paperwork with 2 or 3 people checking it and re-checking it, they should have found the mistake when I was there. Plus I know I filled out my part correctly (having done it enough times). I just tossed the letter and never heard another word about it.

I don't remember the box, but I checked it, but I did not get it all the way through the center of the box.

By the way I barely received a thank you much less my box of .45 ammo. It was the Academy in North Richland Hills.

You folks should experience the thrill of paper work at a place in Plano known as bullet trap. They are more than ridiculous. I figure they must have caught some grief from the storm troopers at some point. I kid you not, they made me spell out Junior at the end of my name instead of allowing me to put the normally considered appropriate Jr. Then they made me write Texas in the state box instead of Tx. There is not enough room for all this in the box and they insisted I make it all fit in the box. It was getting to a point of silly before I was done. I am not the only one to suffer their wrath either. I have several friends who were put through all kinds of hoops filling out that form at bullet trap. Like I said, I bet they have been roasted a time or two.

Personally, I receive a letter asking me to come back to any gun store for the purpose of making a correction on a form, I put said letter in shredder and forget about it.

That stuff was no longer required by the ATF _over 10 years ago_. If you have somebody requiring it now, you can be CERTAIN they are not current on ATF guidance/regs, and are more likely to screw things up than not. Run away from places that are like this, FAR away.

I have occasionally discovered errors in 4473s that need to be corrected by the customer. Unfortunately, you can't send a 4473 to a customer, so they need to come in. Since I don't carry inventory, I usually offer a free transfer in the future. I've only had to do it a couple times though, and not in the last year or so.

That's interesting. I've bought a couple of guns from the Bullet Trap and other than their slightly high prices, I've never had a problem.
The first one I bought was before I had my CHL.
