Photo Question.

Photo question. I have noticed a few times that people can take thier photos with a digital camera. Is this true. I have a lazer jet printer that does photo shop quality and print every day photos all the time. Will these be good enough?

Theoretically, yes you can do it. But...

Spend the $10 at WalMart and have it done right so that you don't hold up all your CHL app. paperwork because the photo was too light or too dark of now quite the right size, or wrong background.

It is not worth the hassle vs. the price.

Same with prints. Prints are one of the leading casues of application delays. If the person doing the prints doesn't do this on a regular basis, you run a considerable of having prints rejected causing considerable delay. Use someone at the local PD or SO if you. The best is the optical scanners type print machines. Much better image than most ink systems.

If your CHL course includes prints, ask about the background of the person doing it.

I went up to Wolf Camera and paid around $10 and got 6 passport photos.

The class doesn't provide?? I'm glad I took the Tx CHL course but even happier that they had everything right there to garuntee I had it all together before I left. Made things alot easier, but it cost me $120.

Guess that's the diffrence between a $50 dollar class and a $120 dollar class. Hopefully I come back with a good report.

I had mine done at Wal-Mart and they were rejected by the DPS because the photographer zoomed too close and my face was too big! It delayed my application by a month because I had to have the pictures retaken (Wal-Mart comped the retake). There are some guidlines for the photos, be sure to read them and make sure your photos comply before you submit them. I assumed the girl at Wal-Mart knew what she was doing. I assumed wrong.

Local PD is no guarantee of getting good prints.

First time, my prints were taken by a Pflugerville (Austin suburb) cop. No good, redone at DPS HQ with ink. Renewal time, my prints were taken by a retired Austin cop. No good, redone at DPS HQ with new electronic machine.

The advantage of living near Austin is that you can hand-carry your packet and have them look things over before you leave, and if necessary - as it was in my case both times - they'll redo the prints right there for $10. (I've heard that they moved the print location away from the CHL offices . . . I'll have to check on this when my renewal comes up again in '08.)

The troubles two different LEOs had getting acceptable prints with a willing subject using a regular fingerprinting kit have taken my faith in fingerprint evidence down quite a few notches . . . no DA would want me on a jury if fingerprints were the core of his prosecution.

Was that renewal Tom Schaefer? I got my prints from him for my class. They did get accepted, though a little nominal in quality, IMO. I was sure they were going to get rejected from the smudginess of my thumb prints.

They have moved the fingerprinting place up the road a bit to a building separate from the big DPS complex. That fancy new machine is something else, though. I went and got my prints done for a background check I needed for joining the Austin Rifle Club (didn't have my CHL yet), and the way that thing works is pretty impressive.

I agree on your fingerprint evidence statement.
