Eligibility?

Five years ago this past September I went into a voluntary treatment program for alcohol. I have since been sober since then. How do I find out when I become eligible for a CHL.

There is some gray area around chemical dependency but the CHL law explicitly states "inpatient or residential substance abuse treatment in the preceding five-year period" makes one ineligible.

Congratulations on your five years of sobriety.

The way I read the law is that it must be five years since you were in treatment.

Has it been five years since the in-patient or residential treatment ended?

I was in house for week and then attended meetings for several weeks. The meetings were not mandatory. So if it is based off of the last day of release from treatment I should be fine I would guess. Is there anyway to find out what shows up on the background check before I apply?

You can find out what the computer background check says for a small fee but there's no quick and easy way to find out what they will find if they search your medical records or paper criminal records at the local courthouse. The best thing is to be honest and disclose all required by law because then you don't have to worry what they find.

Either way, even if it was based off of when you stopped attending the meetings, you'd be eligible pretty quickly anyway.

Congratulations on sobriety. I'm involved in a sobriety ministry, and lack of sobriety can be a difficult thing to overcome, regardless of whether it is substance abuse, porn, food, or any other kind of addiction. People who successfully attain and maintain sobriety in any kind of addiction are to be commended.
