Will outstanding Tolls disqualify me?

And, unless they have issued a warrant for you on the tolls, then there are no criminal charges. I really doubt the back tolls will be an issue.

OK. Skip the tolls and get the free class. You should be good to go if you do it before a warrant is issued. Once they issue a warrant, your newly acquired CHL may be in jeopardy. Welcome to the forum!

I am pretty sure they do not issue warrants for a civil debt. That whole debtor prison thing you know.

Tough crowd! FYI I talked to the state and no the tolls will not be an issue as long as no warrant has been issued. As for the all of the negativity, I cannot defend myself being in the wrong. I paid as much as I could afford today, will have the rest taken care of within the month.

I think we just tend to be sticklers for doing things right, given the seriousness of having a CHL and the possibility of ever needing to use deadly force. No offense meant, I'm sure.

I can't speak for the OP but here is what happened to me. I bought a used car from an incompetent, dishonest used car lot (redundant?). Anyway the title arrives and I open the envelope see it's in there and toss it in the firebox.

We use the 121 tollway a couple of times and no bills. I get nervous and call NTTA and find out there is nothing under my name or address. A few months later I receive a bill for approx $18 worth of tolls and over $350 in fines and late fees. I get on the phone with NTTA and as I am talking to them, I notice the bill has the wrong name and address on it but the right car (how it ever found my house I do not know, I guess it had just enough information). I am arguing with them about it and eventually get a one time courtesy waiver and find out that the DMV had the wrong information. I go look at the title and sure enough, it has my first and middle name and a partial but incomplete address.

I had to call the DMV and get it all corrected. I guess the point is, the OP could very well turn around one day and have a bill from NTTA worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars by something as simple as a clerical error. Yup, pay your tolls but if you and even the NTTA can't find the information, then what else are you supposed to do.

FWIW, I bought toll tags for everyone in my household.

At the bottom of the list, with more than 3,600 unpaid tolls, is Austin resident Alex Garcia. According to TxDOT he owes more than $82,000. Renee Lee Ferguson of Hutto is listed with more than 8,700 unpaid tolls, owing more than $166,000. I remove the license plates and registration sticker when I sell any of my vehicles. The new owner is basically forced to go register the vehicle in their name. Can't drive around without license plates.

I haven't bought or sold a vehicle in a private sale since moving to Texas, but did so a number of times in NOLA over the years. There you simply met the other party at a title transfer company. In a matter of a few minutes everything was legally transferred and registered with the state. They also verified that the purchasing party left with a clean title (any loans against the vehicle had to be paid on the spot by the seller before the transfer was completed). Does Texas not have a similar system?
