I have gotten through on the regular number. You may just have to try several times to get through.

ok.
I want to know how to check my status.
I took the instructor course last year in july. But I heard that you need further training to teach the new 4 hour course.
I also need to know when I would have to do a renewal as well.
I have some folks who want to get there chl thru me and I havent taught any courses since i got my instructor license.
So I am at a loss as to what i need to do.
I also hear that you now need to have the NRA pistol instructor course to be an insturctor.
Is that after renewal or do I need it now.
Too much confusing info out there and cant talk to anyone at DPS about it.

If you got your instructor cert last year you will be up for renewal as of the end of this month. DPS was supposed to contact all instructors and advise they needed to take the DPS one-day renewal course. You will have to take that course to renew.

If you are not a certified NRA or TCLEOSE pistol instructor you will have to get that certification before you can take the renewal course.

And, until you have the NRA instructor certification and gone through the renewal course you will not be able to teach a class after 12/31/13.

Well I didnt get that memo from DPS.
How nice of them.
So does anyone have any instructor material to teach the 4 hour course or any info relating to it so that I can ue it to teach one course to about 8 people.
Ill teach the course before new years and then just let the instructor go since this is too much of a pain in the butt to worry about having.
From what I am told, the CHL holder renews online and doesn't ever need to see an instructor again so it really doesn't pay to keep it.

You can download the Course Outline and new Student Test from this site. The four hours does not include the shooting section.

Have fun.

And can I ask one question.
If it is true that people getting there CHL can renew online and not have to see an instructor I would like to know who's lame idea was this.
And also who's idea was it to have to have the approval of the NRA pistol course to get and keep your texas CHL instructor license.
Yes I am mad and trying to vent quietly.

Simple answer: Yes

House Bill 48
Effective: Sept. 1, 2013
Relating to the procedure where a person may renew a CHL.

Eliminates the requirements for CHL holders to complete a renewal course, or demonstrate proficiency, to renew the license.
CHL holders will continue to have an option to submit the renewal application online.
CHL may be renewed for up to one year after expiration. There is no grace period for continuing to carry, once the CHL has expired.

GC §411.190. QUALIFIED HANDGUN INSTRUCTORS.

(a) The director may certify as a qualified handgun instructor a person who:
(1) is certified by the Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education or under Chapter
1702, Occupations Code, to instruct others in the use of handguns;
(2) regularly instructs others in the use of handguns and has graduated from a handgun instructor school that uses a nationally
accepted course designed to train persons as handgun instructors; or
(3) is certified by the National Rifle Association of America as a handgun instructor.

After the initial license, CHL holders will no longer have to sit through a renewal class. They will simply renew online.

ok. So here is the million dollar question.
If I teach a class of 5 on 12-28-2013 and we cant get to the range to do the range time until after the first, will that be acceptable.

After December 31st you can't conduct the proficiency until you renew your instructor certificate. If you have a instructor friend whose certificate expires December 31, 2015 he/she could conduct the proficiency course and fill out the proficiency section of the CHL-100 for your students.

Also, you cannot sign a CHL-100 after your certificate expires, so you need to provide a CHL-100 to each of your students for the classroom portion only. You also need to submit a CHL-8 to DPS for the classroom portion only, and both need to be signed by Dec. 31st. The CHL instructor that does the proficiency (range) portion will provide a separate CHL-100 and CHL-8 for the range work.
