This kinda puts into perspective why it's taking so long right now...and these are only renewals.

I was in the CHL instructor class that finished last Friday. They told us there are about 20,000 new applications a month coming in.

Can't complain much about wait times if that is the reason. That is great to hear.doncom wrote:I was in the CHL instructor class that finished last Friday. They told us there are about 20,000 new applications a month coming in.

It's only part of the reason. There are several factors that have collided to create the perfect storm:jwine wrote:Can't complain much about wait times if that is the reason. 1. People delaying applying until 9/1/13
2. People who hadn't considered getting a CHL before jumped at the shorter class
3. Every instructor that obtained their certificate before 1/1/13 had to renew their certificate before 12/31/13 to avoid a lapse in their certificate.
4. Nov and Dec contain 3 major holidays and a number of "wheel turners" already had vacation time scheduled.
Number 3 is the biggie here. All instructors renew on odd years after the legislative session so they can be trained on the new laws. What was different about this session was 2 special sessions after the regular session ended. What I am being told by some instructors is DPS did not want to move forward with the process because they were afraid changes would be made in the special session. This put them making the changes to the program and getting all the instructors certified in a much shorter time frame than would normally occur.
This is why people who put in apps Aug and Sep were getting 10 day turnarounds and people applying in later months are looking at 60-90 days.
Now that many of the instructors have been trained and extra help has been hired, even with the larger number of apps coming through those wait times should start to get shorter.

I have an expiration in February. Submitted renewal 12/29/13. Checked the status today and it says mailed. It's not in my hand yet, but not a bad turn around when it gets here.. ![Texas Flag :txflag:](./images/smilies/texasflag.gif)

Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday. John Wayne

Two takeaways from this:
1. God bless the great state of Texas
2. Don't put off the renewal

Yes its great that so many Texans are applying for CHLs, and renewing. Hope it didn't sound like I was complaining about the wait! I am a new applicant and my CHL was mailed on 1/22 (still waiting for it to be delivered.)
