Is Open Carry Activism Threatening our CHL rights.

#1

Post by TacShot »

I believe there is a time and place for open carry. For example, I would like to have the right to unrestricted open carry on my hunting lease. I have no desire to open carry in Walmart. The question in my mind is whether the "IN YOUR FACE" open carry activism is going to accomplish this or is it threatening to narrow my CHL rights. The following link to a news story addresses this issue:

The only thing that concerns me is the possibility (please note that I said ‘possibility’)of the proliferation of 30.06 signs. Suzie soccer mom sees a gun and screeches to the manager of the store. Will the stores cave to this? I don’t know.

OTOH having the general population exposed to guns on a daily basis will cause most, certainly not all, but a very good percentage I think to become comfortable with them.

Like anything new there will be good and bad. We’ll just have to wait to see how things fall into place.

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering, if during their life on earth, they made a difference in the world. But, soldiers don't have that problem.

Some folks are afraid it will. It doesn't concern me since there are way too many places I can go. Bridgeport, Decatur, Springtown, we even have a store in Cottondale down the road about 10 miles...

If somebody launches a petition to force the "moms demand action cartel" to stop lying I will gladly sign it...

I've always beleived the "In your face" attitude of the extremists do way more harm than good. CA is proof that that tactic does not work. They tried it and lost. Then when they did not learn from that blunder, tried it again with long guns and lost again. Idiots.

I disagree. Even in open carry states (and I have lived in a lot of them), you rarely if ever see anyone open carrying and thus has not been much of an issue. But if it's done enough to be noticed, it will probably do more harm than good.

And with the youth of today being taught that guns are evil, any sight of them is going to raise a bigger stink than the few folks that might not care.

But for how long? What happens when the signs start sprouting up like weeds?

I personally see no advantage to OC when there are much more important issues that people should be advocating (i.e. getting rid of most gun free zones, etc.) IMO OC would eventually erode away many of the gains we have made, because as always it will be the actions of a few (those in your face people) that will ruin it for everyone. There have been people here who have posted that they would intensionally OC where they knew it would cause problems and that they would do it just for that reason.

If open carry passses, there are going to be a whole lot more 30.06 signs posted. Especially if anyone like hoodlums can carry and are walking around in groups holding there pants up with a pistol on there waists.

Only history can say. At the time, some people thought the A&T Four "in your face" activism threatened advances in civil rights.

I don't believe that there will be more 30.06 signs which; BTW, are unique to Texas, if OC were to pass in Texas. Like poppo said above, we travel/live in so-called Gold Star OC states 5-6 months out of the year and we very rarely see anyone in OC mode. OC ain't no big deal where it is legal.

As for the hoodlums holding their pants up, legalities are not their primary concern.....in any event.

For the anti their logic ( i.e. fear that the presence of arms would make the premise unsafe) for OC of longfirearms or sidearms when it passes, is absurd and idiotic. We have some 500,000 CHLer and they are wondering around all the time armed with 1 or more sidearms. Do they feel safe or scared when we walk around them. I bet you they have no clue we are armed, none the less we are armed. So, with 1/2 million CHLer and no one had his gun jumped out and scared the loulou of the anti-gun liars. Thus, firearms are safe to be around. However, their fear is irrational and emotional, their perception is not founded in factual reality.
Are they afraid when the anti sees LEO armed or when a SWAT is deployed? If so, best for those anti is to have a vacation in Somalia or Yemen.

I don't believe the "They will get used to it" line that people are pushing. I grew up in a couple of small towns where you could go to school with a gun in the rack in your truck. People just didn't carry into stores or restaurants ever. There was just no need and it didn't happen. A kid on his bike would prop his .22 inside door or by the counter inside a store when he went to go get candy or whatever. The idea that anyone would ever walk up to the counter of dairy queen with a rifle slung is misleading at best. They always would of thought you had issues and the cops would be talking to you. If there is a reason then people still don't give you a second look now. It is when you are doing something that there is no reason for that people start wondering what the heck you might be up to.
