Dr. asking about guns

#1

Post by ldj1002 »

Been hearing more lately about Dr. being required to ask about guns in your house. Is this required?. I am to get physical in a couple weeks and if I am ask should I lie and say none or should I tell him it's non of his business? I think maybe best tell him that doesn't seem medical and end the physical right then.

My doctor has never asked me about guns, but the last time I was there for a check-up the nurse handed me a two sided form she said was required to be filled out. It had questions that were depression related and some that were obviously about any physical impairments. I put the clip board and form behind the garbage can. I was not seeing my normal GP that day.

Short answer from my wife (retired 27 years as ER Supervisor) is no, it is not required. She instructs our family that any question by a physician not directly related to physical health should just be marked: N/A

If they ask, reply "What does it say on the form?" If they try to push you, find another Dr.

N.A. is a good answer. Then ask the doctor what kind of guns he/she owns. I would not use that as an excuse to walk out on what might be the best doc in town.

I was in the doctors today and I had to take off my shirt. Surprise! Glock 19 and zero was said. Of course I have been using the same doctor for about 24 years and he knows my other life as a LEO. I have some new doctors, but they have never asked.

As far as I know it's not against the law to lie to a doctor. Not being honest about your medical history also isn't against any law, but might not be smart. I guess I should stop wearing my NRA hat and shirt to the doctors office. Mine hasn't asked by the way if someone is keeping track. Might make a good poll.

3 of my doctors have taken the Tx CHL with me and recertified multiple times, and 2 of the pharmacists also.

Once the medical questions are over ; we have another conversation.

Was in Doctor office last summer for a yearly, he or his staff have never asked me about weapons. However, after the exam he quizzed me about Texas CHL laws and my carry weapon. He said he noticed my holster and was curious what type of weapon I carried ,which by the way I had to leave in my truck as they are posted. So, we had a good 10 minute conversation about carry weapons and CHL laws. He then told me he and his wife were going to get their CHL the following weekend.

My Dr has a CHL welcome sign posted so no worries there.
The negative is my carry weapon doesnt help the reading on the scale during weigh in.
I love the sound smell of jet fuel in the morning.

Once 3 or 4 years ago my clinic handed me a form that had gun ownership/storage questions. I just put N/A on those and commented to the receptionist when I handed it to her. She said she understood and it was not a problem. Now the senior practitioner at the clinic is an NRA member and her husband is a local FFL...

LOL!

I had to visit a Doc-in-the-box a few weeks ago because of a sinus infection. They gave me that form to fill out but were quick to add that answering it was up to me. I left it blank until I read the question... "Describe your sexual habits." I wrote, "Healthy" and gave it back.

The only time I've been asked is when we take the kids for something. Usually they ask during the annual visit. I've learned to ask for the form instead of letting the nurse read off the questions. Easier that way to mark N/A.

At the VA my doctors nurse has ask about depression and sleep habits but never ask about guns. My regular doctor has never ask. If he did I would tell him I had a safe full and ask did he need to borrow one for a hunting trip.

All my Doc's are in 30.06 posted bldgs. so I just unholster (CC OWB Belt), place gun in auto lock box and leave empty holster in place. None, but two have said anything about it and that was Doc assistant that just wanted to be sure I hadn't accidentally left it in waiting area and an MRI tech wanted to know if I was a LEO and told him I had license to carry and that ended conversation.. To date none of the Doc's have had any forms requesting info on guns. I changed primary care physician in late 2013 as my old GP Doc retired - he was retired Army, so we discussed guns frequently during exams and sometimes long after.

Once upon a Dr. visit, my PCP noticed my empty holster and asked if I'd lost my gun. On another visit to a different Dr., I had to drop trou for an unexpected shot in the buttocks. I handed my 1911 to Mrs. Oldgringo in front of the nurse who did not flinch. Neither the nurse nor the DR. said a 'mumbalin word' about me being armed in the medical facility.

As Mojo recently opined in another but similar topic thread, I think this is another ant hill that does not need kicking.
