tragedies like this are why i wish my wife would be more accepting of firearms and get her CHL. she is very anti-guns(maybe her only flaw ) she hates the idea that i am getting mine and i am not even allowed to talk about guns . i bought her some pepper spray but when i tried it on myself it really didn't affect me, now i plan to get her some sabre. even with examples as this, the statistics supporting CHL, i can't convince her to at least practice at the range with me. oh well i won't push the issue, it is a personal freedom of course. i worry sometimes especially when she has my babies out and going shopping and i can't be there. shoot i worry sometimes when i am out and about, i stopped at a gas station once with my son and got the sickest feeling about the place and wondered why the heck would i even come in here. we skidaddled PDQ.

Wouldn't it still cost you your life savings to defend yourself in court, even if you did the right thing?dac1842 wrote:One poster asked what would have happend had a CHL been nearby and shot the BG? The police would have bought you a steak dinner. Remember the use of deadly force is authorized in defense of third person when that person's life is in immenent danger.
FIRST customer right here! When and where do we meet? I'm serious. It would be neat if an advanced course on survival techinques were offered to CHL holders. hmmm perhaps a business idea>??! Anyway, the short message to long one, stay alert!
After all of the BG's taking lives lately, it's high time that the Good Guys start taking these things seriously. Or, once again, maybe I'm just arriving late to the dance.

there is is high probability of that happening.Wouldn't it still cost you your life savings to defend yourself in court, even if you did the right thing?

I don't know why people keep saying this. The number of Texas CHL holders who have been sued or had a criminal trial after a defensive shooting is in the single digits.
Shooting to defend a third person whom you do not know is risky and has to be thought over carefully. However, in this case, the killer was already wanted for violent crimes. There is no question in my mind that someone who stopped him would suffer no legal consequences.

Because they are afraid. They keep reading about it in the gun magazines and they keep hearing stories in the media about people getting sued for all kinds of stupid things.seamusTX wrote:I don't know why people keep saying this.

The texas legislature put in a clause last session giving CHL holders civil immunity (Chas chime in if I am wrong!!) in the lawful use of deadly force. Being an ex cop, and still having many many friends that still are, There is a not a cop walking the planet or a DA that had a CHL holder internvened properly in this case and shot the BG would file charges on you. Yes your case would go to a grand jury as do all homicide cases, but you can believe that that would be no billed in a minute.
When all of you went through the CHL course defense of a third party I hope was discussed. Granted being an ex cop, with SWAT experience I have a little bit more training, the scenario is no different. I hope I will not offend with my next statement, if being sued is going to stop you from intervening in a justified event, I suggest you leave the firearm at home and mail your CHL back to the state. BY intervening I dont mean shooting, though if it comes to that you have to respond, intervention of force, that being drawing the weapon and giving a command to stop, may prevent the issue from escalating.
In this case had a someone been present willing to intervene from what I have seen on the video, draw and fire would have been the only option. The BG exited his vehicle, approached aggressively and stabbed the victim within a few seconds.
As far as the class goes I mentioned I am calling a buddy of mine with DPS monday and check on what we can do. I will keep you posted. I have already cussed and discussed with others who want it to. Lots to do plus working 70 hours a week, assisting on the safety team at our church and preparing for a mission trip...

Same here - though she's not as stridently anti as you've described yours to be. This kind of thing happening makes me want to show her and say, "See? See? It could happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time." but that would just turn her off even more.Armed-Texan wrote:tragedies like this are why i wish my wife would be more accepting of firearms and get her CHL.

i worry sometimes especially when she has my babies out and going shopping and i can't be there.
Can someone post a link to the video?

There's a version of it here: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/pages ... geId=3.2.1
Look for Videos.
BTW, I made an incorrect statement earlier in this thread. They haven't caught the killer. They identified him and are searching for him. He may have fled to Mexico.

I guess it depends on what ones lifes savings is. But a good clean justified shooting, most times will never go beyond a grand jury, and it might go a couple thousand.locknload wrote:Wouldn't it still cost you your life savings to defend yourself in court, even if you did the right thing?dac1842 wrote:One poster asked what would have happend had a CHL been nearby and shot the BG? Dont Understand
I never understood why people are anti-gun, knowing how crime is getting worse, more violent, but these people don't really have an idea as to how to Protect yourself against a violent person out to do you harm.
I wouldn't keep quiet to my spouse or relative about firearms, if they don't like it, they just don't like it.

Well, you could, but CPS frowns on stuff like that...seamusTX wrote: You can't drop the kid in an emergency.

srsly, I have taken a keen interest in looking in the rearview mirrors before I "deploy" from my "Urban Assault Vehicle."
I'm trying to get my gal to follow suit, and to quit unlocking the doors and bailing out as soon as the UAV slows down enough for a good Hondo Roll.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

That's certainly a good idea, but a criminal can arrive seemingly out of nowhere very quickly.DoubleJ wrote:I have taken a keen interest in looking in the rearview mirrors before I "deploy" from my "Urban Assault Vehicle."
There's another situation that I consider even more risky: I was going to my parked car at the grocery store the other day. A car was parked next to mine, and a guy was sitting in the passenger seat with the window down. He didn't do anything, but he could have if he had been a criminal.
Women get their purses snatched in exactly this situation.

Re: Reason to keep gun on your person, not in car.
agreed. but I was looking at it from the perspective that the door somewhat "shields" you from the front, so the back is your more exposed area.
I'll concede the cars parked directly next to you should be evaluated as well. good point.

Good on you for checking around before you exit. Cars with people sitting in them should be noticed as well as others close by. Remember we get to choose our parking spot, so choose carefully.DoubleJ wrote:agreed. but I was looking at it from the perspective that the door somewhat "shields" you from the front, so the back is your more exposed area.

Be aware that a car door can be used to mash/trap you, or as an impact weapon against you. Your head getting bounced off the car door and into the car, could be your first indication that it's go time.

That happened right down the street from me. My wife goes to San Jac right there and cant stand the fact that she cant carry a gun with her. The school is right across the street from the Cricket store. dang illegals!
