Concealed Carry Confrontation

Right on, Ron. One of the things we CHLers should be reminded of over and again, is to avoid confrontations and de-escalate situations which might lead to a confrontation. I am afraid that some of the advice tendered here is aimed at nothing short of aggravating the situation.

I was not implying that anyone should be confrontational about the situation. I always ask those questions in a very pleasant tone, with a smile on my face. There is nothing confrontational about a question.

I have learned that, when a question is asked that my first thought would be to answer "that is none of your business", it is always best to answer with a question, such as "why do you ask?". And another question, and another, until they finally give up or get the hint that it is none of their business.

All while keeping a pleasant tone, and a smile.

I like your strategy. I'm working on getting past someone who is intent about worrying more about me than they should. If I don't say something stupid in the first 30 seconds following being asked a really intrusive question like this, I generally can find a smile and usually an opportunity to have a little fun with them. It is those first 30 seconds that sometimes get away from me.

Does "what's it to ya?" count as one of your questions?

Who are you? Who do you represent? Why are you asking me? Why do you think that such a personal question should deserve an answer?

Why not just treat it as a threat and call the police? Clearly the employee is acting in their own interests because the store is not posted 30.06, therefore the employee is potentially trying to identify people to assault at a later time.

That would bring an end to that "store policy" REAL QUICK.

Unless the somebody asking me is a cop in uniform or a judge, I'm going to answer "no". Perfectly fine to lie to a random stranger.

I'm gonna laugh and ask him what part of my outfit gave me away. My bet is that he would not have picked me as a potential CHLer. I usually wear t-shirts with random dumb sayings or political views on them. Lighten up... ya'll are all gonna die eventually and the guy working the door at Academy having a little fun to pass the time won't matter.

My daughter and I have played this game before. She always picks the yehaw looking guys wearing gimme caps and hunting vests... LOL. I look for the "shirt over a t-shirt" guys. Especially anything with hawaiian print.

My brother told me that on one of his trips to Academy (not sure which one but probably Lufkin) that there was an employee sitting at the front of the store trying to pick out who was carrying, and he was actually asking people to confirm or deny it.

How would you react to this kind of comfrontation?

PS... this is not really what I would call a confrontation. But then again, I am generally a pretty easy going feller with others I see in public. It sounds to me like he was just having some fun trying to pick out folks that look likely to be carrying concealed. Maybe your brother should check ihis mannerisms to figure out what gave him away.

Tell him that even if I were carrying it would be illegal for me to tell him because that would make it intentionally failing to conceal the presence of the gun.

If you tell somebody you are carrying a concealed handgun you might as well not be concealing it.

Then I would have politely told him to shove off.

What If you are in a casual conversation with another CHL friend, let's say at "Academy" buying ammo
and someone else happens to overhear that you are carrying?
I thought failure to conceal according to the law in this situation was a visible thing...

Me, I would've probably shot him right off of his stool. That'll teach 'em.

I'm not sure that the Lufkin Academy is the worst, but I am sure that I don't go there no more.

I might say, "Can I pleae see your badge?" When he lets me know that he does not have one, I would say, "Do you know it is illegal to impersonate a police officer?" Then I would walk on in.

Just ignore him as you would any drudge or anyone asking for your personal information on the street, he has no right or need to know.
