The laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

The tests and fees for a CHL should be eliminated for the same reasons we no longer have literacy tests and poll taxes.
I agree and believe it is racism, elitism and the exact same fear that caused people to invent gun control and adopt it in Texas.

I've never said Texas couldn't do it for less, or that licensing should even be necessary. But...crazy high fees?

It's $140 for five years; $70 for renewals. That's 28 bucks a year; 14 a year for renewals.

Seems like a small price to upgrade since your lifetime Indiana permit doesn't even allow you to bypass NICS checks when you want to buy firearms. Too, a resident Texas permit allows you to carry in a whole lot more states than a non-resident Indiana permit; for example: Florida, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Michigan, Minnesota, and Delaware.

I'm all for non-resident licenses to augment a resident license; I have a Utah CFP; might get Arizona for travel to Nevada. But I've never been a fan of bypassing the license of your resident state, strictly legal or not. Never understood that.

I paid $20 for my 5-year PA non-resident license.

My UT non-resident renewals are $15 for five years.

I'm not saying licenses in other states aren't cheaper...or that Texas fees couldn't/shouldn't be reduced. I'm just saying I don't think Texas fees are "crazy high." For example, if you shoot .45 ACP and buy commercial ammo, a $70 renewal equates to around 200 rounds of range FMJ. That's one morning at the range versus a 5-year license.

Just doesn't seem all that unaffordable to me...

Compared to a custom 1911 it's cheap. Compated to a Porsche 911 it's really cheap. However, compared to something comparable like concealed handgun licenses from other states, it's one of the more expensive ones. It's also very expensive compared to a State ID. If the cost of a Texas ID card violates the right to vote, the cost of a Texas CHL is a much bigger civil rights violation.
I didn't vote for Obama.
Somebody else did that.

Well, that's what you get for putting that envelope with your name on it under half a ton of garbage, Arlo.
