What's the general feeling about carrying when going to the gym? In the dressing room when you change clothes you would, by necessity, have to unconceal your gun. Would this be considered intentionally unconcealing it in public?

I think it would be allowed by law. Maybe. But I still don't do it. It is in my bag when I exit the car and goes back on as soon as I get back into the car.

I assumed discretely - using a towel or similar where it could still be concealed but unintentional exposure is much more likely. But I still do it in the car.

When I was going to the gym on a regular basis, I would use my gym towel to hide the fact that I was removing my weapon. At no time was the weapon visible or identifiable That is only one of many things you should be concerned about. Most gyms provide a locker for you to put your stuff in while working out…do not leave your weapon in those lockers. I have a family member who use to work at a gym…those lockers are broken into on a fairly regular basis. Here comes the other problem, most gyms have a policy that you are not allowed to bring your gym bag out on the gym floor with you. This leaves your options somewhat limited…leave your weapon in a locker prone to theft…or violate their policy and bring your bag with you on to the gym floor. I always chose the latter. I never had any issues…but be prepared to leave early if they say something about your gym bag.

I’m not sure why this public venue is any different then any other public venue. I would do everything I could to keep the weapon concealed.

Unfortunately my gym has compliant 30.06s on the entrances. We also sign a list of rules as a condition of membership (and guess what one of those rules is). The representative explicitly made sure to say "no guns" are allowed. This in itself would normally keep me from joining but the gym is on my way home and has everything I would need to keep my pudgy body under control. My routine is to leave directly from work (also not able to carry there) to go exercise. Basically I would not have my CCW with me to begin with.

I wouldn't trust those lockers anyway. The one's available here are particularly nice looking, wooden lockers with the lock set flush to the door. But with one quick pry, they could pop open.

I think someone posted here or on another forum about locker theft being very common at some of the larger gyms. The parking lots are also fair game. All someone has to do is watch you go in. They know they have at least 30 minutes to work with to relieve you of your belongings in your vehicle.

It's your call. If you were going to leave it in a gym locker, hopefully you have the option of bringing in your own lock. I think when you take it off, better to do it in your car rather than out in a locker room. The less people see the better with regard to that. You can take your time then instead of hurridly in a locker area.

I haven't been to a gym in a while, but whether or not unconcealing in the dressing room would be considered "intentional" or not under the law would not be my primary concern. Primary concerns would be 1.) How secure is the storage at the gym? (I can't really see anyone wanting to play raquetball or whatever while strapped. And, if you need to...you need to change gyms or exercise a home!) and 2.) Do I really want to run the risk of being "made" while changing in a dressing room with people I really don't know? Seems to me, nothing good can come of it so I would secure my carry weapon BEFORE I went inside the gym whether that be at home, in the car, etc.

I solve this by keeping my Glock locked up in a GunVault in the truck, and I carry in my NAA Mini and keep it zipped up in a compartment of my chalk bag. It is actually an insulated soft lunch box, but it works well for the gym. My phone, wallet, and keys fit in the front pocked which zipps closed. My gun is in the top portion along with my MP3 Player, and the chalk is in the main compartment.

Or you can just do what I do. Gun goes inside...go to the 1st available stall and put it in the gym bag...get dressed for work-out and bag gets locked into the locker...finish work-out....shower...get dressed...bag goes into the stall with me...re-arm and go on my way. No one sees a thing and I go in protected and out protected.

I carry a camelbak that has a pocket on the backside, I keep it with me while I work out and run with it, etc. This works well, I kinda get nervous when lifting weights but I haven't had any issues to date, just have to keep your eyes open.

I disarm into my bag in a stall when I arrive and then reverse the process when I leave.

Wide stance is optional!

Unfortunately, our gym's parking lot is poorly lit. I take my stuff in with me.

I typically carry a gym bag. I don't bother with a purse, but keep my wallet in my gym bag, along with anything I think I may need while there. If I'm taking one of the classes, I'll usually bring my bag with me and set it off to the side. Otherwise, I use the lockers, but with my own lock.

I wouldn't want to leave my gun in my vehicle. I like having it while walking through the parking lot.

As for changing, I use a dressing stall. If one isn't available, I'll use a RR or shower stall. I don't want to alert someone that I have a weapon and that it's going into a locker, whether it's legal to do so or not.
