So, anybody else CCW a mousegun?

#1

Post by Kurt_S »

Just did a search for "mousegun" on the forum and only came up with 2 posts.

First off I will admit to being a mite neurotic about printing, accidental flashing, and such.

When I first got my CHL way back when, I was a real 1911 bigot. I tried carrying my all-steel 1991 Commander in various ways. About the best was one of those pager pals but even that kind of failed to do the trick, I was always adjustin' and otherwise messing about with the doggone thing.

Okay, so the big boomer well known to knock a 250 lb man back 10 ft with a hit in the thumb was not going to work out. So, next I tried a S&W Model 60 .357 snub IWB. Since everybody knows that the 125 grain .357 hollowpoint stops the BG 98 times out of 100, I made that my carry load. Problem is that there's a bit recoil and blast associated with the load; I practiced with it and found I needed a nice big set of recoil-absorbing Hogues, which kind of made that snub seem to stick a mile out of that holster.

Well, after much thought, trial & error and a lot of gun show visits, I kind of rotate carry guns:
most often, Keltec P3AT back pocket
sometimes Taurus ultra-lite concealed hammer .38, front pocket
occasionally, NAA Guardian .32 back pocket
when I can't carry a gun, NAA .22 mag mini, 1-5/8" bbl
I try to practice with each of them as much as I can.

That said, I have IWB holsters that I can conceal a S&W N frame with - for about 5 minutes.

Well, how about y'all?

I sometimes carry a Beretta Model 21 in .25 calibre. I figure it offers better protection than a pocket knife.

I also took the old-timer's advice and filed the front sight flat.... "rlol"

Real regularly if PM-9 or S&W340 are small enough to meet your definition of "mouse gun". ;-)

While doing some work up and down on a little scaffold last week while wearing draw-string shorts in some hot and humid weather, I did substitute the NAA .22 mag with 1 5/8" barrel. Last week too, there was a pretty favorable article in SWAT magazine on the new Ruger .380 LCP. It made me "need" that new mouse gun even more.

I have seen this on other forums and I wonder what the definition of "mouse gun" really is ...

I wouldn't think any 9mm or .380 is a "mouse gun". I'd have guessed .32 and smaller.

Always carry a P3AT Kel-Tec in a pocket holster. Even with my primary carry. But the Kel-Tec is always with me. :thumbs2:

I'd rather have a good knife. A 22lr is a better round than a 25.

As for mouse guns, I carry a Beretta Tomcat/Alleycat (32acp) when I need that level of discretion but I prefer a midsize gun. 4" 1911, Glock 23, etc.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

A KelTec P3AT is often the only thing I carry. On Sundays, during warm weather, it rides in the top of my left cowboy boot in a thin leather IWB holster. Often that holster will be used IWB as well. Also have two different OWB holsters for the P3AT. There is also a KT PF9 in my carry guns. It's almost always in an IWB Don Hume that slips in and out (when desired) very easily. By definition, the Pf9 isn't really a "mousegun" though.

For mousegun information you may want to visit Dr. Marshall St. John's website at

Marshall is known as "Preacherman" on many gun related sites.

I've always smiled at the expression "friends don't let friends carry mouseguns," but I ain't volunteering to get shot with one. I know that a lot of people are comfortable with calibers smaller than .380 ACP, but for me personally, that's kind of the personal minimum with which I am comfortable. I will probably buy a P-3AT or LCP at some point. I own a Colt Government in .380; but I never carry it because it isn't a good pistol for left-handed carry, it is not flawlessly reliable, nor is it all that accurate. Plus, it's a pretty pristine example, and I really want to keep it that way if I can.

At this moment my daily carry is a 3" Kimber, and my smallest carry pistol is a S&W 642; but even the 642 is a little big for some applications, although I make do with it.

I'm just curious... for you guys who are carrying .380s, what kind of ammo do you keep in them?

My daily carry is a P3AT.
I also have 7 or 8 other .380s, mostly mini-1911s.

I occasionally also carry a P32 or a NAA Black Widow in .22 mag.

I'm OK with any of the above.

I usually load the .380 with MagTechs, but I bought some Buffalo Bore the other day and switched to those, pending range tests.
P32 get Silvertips.
BW gets VCCI V-max TNTs

When I bought the gun I was told by several that the .25 fed more reliably than the .22, this influenced calibre selection as I preferred that the gun go 'bang' repeatedly. Also, I'm reasonably certain that if you're viewing the opposite end of the .25 that I'm pointing, that the barrel diameter appears roughly the same diameter as a garbage can. Finally, I've met a couple of men over the years, each barely over five feet tall, who could easily take a knife away from anyone and then give it back to them. :reddevil

You really gonna bring a knife to a gunfight? :fire
