30.06 Questions
Tonight I got off my rear and rode bikes with my son down to the local park and Rec center. Upon arrival we decided to get him a membership so he can play with his friends this summer. As I got to the door I was stopped in my tracks by a Valid 30.06 sign. I did leave and take my weapon home and returned with out it. I wasn't for sure if the sign that is up is legal because its city owned property or if it falls under the school designation. This also brings another question to mind. If I attend my sons football practice this summer which will be held on school property but not inside of the school buliding and its not a school sponsored event will this be a violation? I almost forgot there is a covered but not enclosed breeze way between the poilce/courts building and the Rec center but the buildings are not attached.

Re: 30.06 Questions
There are many people here who are experts on this law. I'm not one of them. City property is not defacto of 30.06, and this rec center doesn't sound attached to a school from how you describe it. Was the sign legal as far as size, contrasting color, english/spanish, etc?

Re: 30.06 Questions
Yes it was a legal. I have walked past a few invaild signs in the last few weeks and this one was vaild. In this general area there is a middle school about 600 yards to the west of the Rec center and a public library about 100 yard to the west. There are diffrent drives seperating the property of the library and the school however the rec center , library, and police/courts building share one public parking lot.

Re: 30.06 Questions
IANAL but here goes anyway. Am I correct in understanding that there were 2 questions here? The first about a city owned rec center and the second about a school activity not inside a building.
If the Rec center is city owned property then it cannot enforce 30.06. They can post it, but it means nothing and you are 100% legal to carry there.
If you are at a school sponsored event, then you cannot legally carry regardless of where it is being held. I would think that football practice on the school grounds meets this definition. You could legally leave it in the car, but it couldn't be on you while you are at the practice. As soon as it is over you could legally carry there though (since it is outside and no school sponsored event was happening anymore).

Re: 30.06 Questions
With the distances you quoted, I would think the rec center is owned by the city. You would be legal if that's the case. I would think a quick call to the rec center or city hall would get you that answer.
In regards to football practice, if the football team is not a school team, it's not a school sponsored event, and therefore, in my opinion, it's legal to carry. I had a similar scenario in which our little league team would practice at the elementary school playground as all the teams had to take turns practicing at the playing field. I carried since I wasn't in a building, and it was not a school sponsored event. Little league is not in any way linked to school districts. If you're kid's football team is in no way linked to the school district, I think that's where the decision can be made.
Of course, IANAL!

Re: 30.06 Questions
If the football team is the school's team just practicing in the summer, then practice is off-limits.

Re: 30.06 Questions
It is a city sponsored league for the kids. They hold practices in vast open fields of the elementary schools . My son will not play for the school until he hits middles school and I know that is off limits. I just did not know if the schools practice fields are off limits during a non school events. I am not going to take a chance and will secure my weapon in my truck but I would like to know if I could carry out there..
Re: 30.06 Questions
It's a city park. The practice is not a school function. Carry is perfectly legal.mpbrown96 wrote:I am not going to take a chance and will secure my weapon in my truck but I would like to know if I could carry out there..
We just finished our t-ball season, which is conducted by a private organization using city parks. I was carrying at every game.
Re: 30.06 Questions
I'm with KBCraig, you can carry. I also carried at every little league game, mostly because I went to them straight after work. Like I said previously, when we would have practice at the elementary school fields, I carried there as well. In my amateur opinion, you're good to go because it's not a school function since it's a city sponsored league, you're not inside a school building, and city owned property can't enforce 30.06.mpbrown96 wrote:It is a city sponsored league for the kids. One caveat I guess is that obviously it seems they have an attitude against CHL carry since they posted 30.06, even if it's not enforceable. This might be another situation where you can beat the charge but you'll still get a ride. Of course, concealed is concealed so you can also think, why would you get a ride anyway? So this comes down to that you just get to make a decision that you're comfortable with.
