Texas Administrative Code Title 37, Part 1, Chapter 6, Rule 6.14 contains the legal requirements for the shooting proficiency test. It does not mention equipment at all, other than the minimum .32 caliber requirement, which is in the law.

This is for a person who is having a problem getting a good sight picture with iron sights. By focusing at a distance on the laser dot, it would get rid of the visual problem that is making them fire slowly (thus having trouble with the timed nature of the CHL test), though very accurately.

As you know, you don't exactly have to be Jerry Miculek's godson to pass the shooting qualification. However, the person can just ask some instructors. You're about equidistant from PSC and ElGato in Texas City.

You could tape over the sights and any competent shooter could still pass the CHL qualification. They might not beat 95% but 70% is no problem. Like Jim says, if it concerns you, you can call instructors and ask until you find one who allows it.

Probably can't see it well in bright daylight anyway.

It's up to the instructor. We generally don't allow it, but I have made exceptions for sight impaired individuals.

Way back then I had a Bushnell HoloSight mounted on my 1911 - you should have seen the mods I made to the holster just to carry that beast - and we were told that a HoloSight would not be permitted, but that a laser would - so my bride went and purchased me a set of laser grips, which I didn't use for the qual, but which I carry.

You might be surprised. The two that I tried were bright enough on a sunny day.

I am surprised that some instructors wouldn't allow laser sights since the law doesn't forbid it. Maybe they want to make sure the person can shoot if the laser doesn't work?

My instructor stated that he would allow a laser if the student asked,and that nothing prohibited use of lasers or other visual sighting aids.

That has my curiosity going. I was under the impression that the CHL training requirements were standardized by the state. How much latitude does an instructor have to impose requirements that go beyond those imposed by statute or regulation? Could you impose a minimum caliber of .38 if you desired? Could you require everyone to shoot one-handed with the weak hand? What are the limitations on the instructors ability to impose restrictions based on personal belief or whim? Can some of the knowledgeable instructors here please enlighten me?
