State of Texas as an Employer -Background Check ?

State University's and ISD"s generally require a background check for "security sensitive" positons or contractors contracting in such.

This includes a standard DPS DL check as one part. Curious-- since CHL records are linked to DL #, does this show up on the institution's DL-based background check ?

Your CHL is not linked to your DL, it will show when a warrant check is run. If a University or ISD Police department is conducting the background check and run your warrants they will see it, if they are doing a standard DL check it will not show up.

I beg to differ.....running a DL check will also return CHL information. When the DL database is inquired on, an automatic check of the CHL database is done. The results are returned to the inquiring agency as a separate response along with the DL return.

An inquiry for wanted or criminal history information is submitted through TCIC (Texas Criminal Information Center) and NCIC (National Criminal Information Center) and the results are returned back to the inquiring agency. Such an inquiry submitted only to TCIC/NCIC will not return CHL information.

The short answer to Piney's question is "yes".

A DL check does not return CHL status, only your drivers license information, the Warrant Check holds your CHL info on TCIC. If Piney's background check is run as it is at my agency for school contractors (university police dept.) we will run DL, Warrants, CCH, and RDB. But the only persons that may see that information are sworn personnel and communications operators, the department will only give a Pass/Fail to HR for applicants since they are not allowed to see the returns.

When a 10/27 (Check of drivers status) is run on your DL your CHL pops up. You do not have to run a 10/29 (Warrant) to obtain CHL info. A lot of departments run an automatic 27/29, but if you just run the DL it will come up. :tiphat:

Is that only if law enforcement runs it? Does a normal driving record check show it?

I seem to remember being told in my CHL class that NO-ONE aside from LEOs are able to obtain information regarding your CHL status. Was I misinformed or am I just missing something there?

I think the point many are missing is who runs the DL check. Your CHL status will show up if the police run it, but not on a check from another agency for a background check. Consider that insurance companies run your DL's all the time for rating purposes. You can go order a DL check at DPS for the court for a ticket clearance. Neither of these willr eveal your CHL status.

I think the employer would not be told about your CHL status, but some agencies cheat and have their PD run the check. In those cases (which are of debatable legality), they would know about the CHL.
