Holy cow...I bet this would cost some money. Ten hours of one on one training???? Why do you want to do it alone. It actually is better to have more folks to keep it from being the longest day in your life. I would not want to miss out on all the stupid questions people ask in the class.

I agree that for most of us a real class with with other students is the best way. Other folks in the past have posted for the same thing. Reasoning varies. Some folks have a tough schedual. Others are might have special needs, that would make them uncomfortable in a standard class room. Some folks just want special attention that comes with one on one.

Yes, a private CHL class will tend to be more expensive. The flipside is you get the instructor's undivided attention for that whole ten hours. That often translates to an extra thirty minutes to two-and-a-half hours with your instructor. The extra time allows us to discuss some items in greater detail or possibly review information that wouldn't be covered in a larger class or one open to the public.

I bet it would be real difficult to fill 10 hours with good information. Most of the time would be spent beating a dead horse or maybe spending allot of quality time exchanging band camp stories. LOL...I personally don't know many fellers i would want to spend 10 hours discussing CHL rules with. It isn't that complicated. Now if you are thinking you can get some combat training while doing CHL, choose carefully...many CHL instructors are only alive because they never actually had to draw a weapon. My instructor thought he was Chuck Norris...I couldn't believe some of the baloney that guy spewed in an effort to look like Tommy Tough Guy. What I am saying is, CHL instructor status does not make a person some kind of expert on all things self defense and legal. Charles could probably spend 10 hours giving you a legal class on CHL, but lawyers are real expensive....I bet more than one would think...ten hours with my business attorney would cost me about 2500 bucks...LOL.

Is that your opinon as an instructor or just someone who felt tortured as you sat through the class to get your ticket punched at the end of the day? I agree that having just going through the 40hr class with DPS does not make one an expert on anything. There certainly were some world class idiots in my 2005 instructors' class and renewals have certainly been no less entertaining. However, I don't think it's all that difficult for a competent instructor to fill 10 hours with good information without beating a dead horse or telling war stories.

I am sure that if you ask any competent CHL instructor on this board, we all know what's mandated by the state but feel there at least one more piece of information worthy of being shoehorned into the lesson plan if one can manage the time to get it in. Those pieces often become the "extra credit" stuff we can add in if a class moves along faster than expected. I have done about two dozen private classes when I had the time and I can assure you, the private students got one heck of a lot more information out of me than those who sat through the all day Saturday classes I did at Top Gun or Memorial Shooting Center. But those are my experiences and opinions after teaching CHL, handgun, rifle and shotgun classes in commercial and private settings for four years.

Agree with you 100%. I try to squeeze 12-15 hours worth of instruction into 10 hours, and I always leave wondering if I gave them enough. It is an awesome responsibility the DPS has entrusted us with, and I do my best to live up to it. A private class can be as long as the student wants it to be, so, YES, if you can afford it, you most certainly get your money's worth.

Tom Estep (El Gato here on the forum) does private instruction out of Texas City, and could probably do a one-on-one class. He's had a recent death in his family (his wife) and hasn't been on the forum much lately, but I do hear he is still teaching classes. I'm not sure what his availability is these days, but you could contact him and see. I'm told by many that he's a great instructor.

His daughter, Tami, is also a CHL instructor; and they are still teaching classes.

Tom is not only a CHL instructor but an NRA certified instructor and a good shooting coach.

The thing that you have to think about is that an instructor brings in $1-2,000 in revenue per class. If I were an instructor who could fill up two classes per weekend, I don't know what I would charge for a 1-on-1 class, but it wouldn't be peanuts.

In days of old when knights were bold, you could find classes with only a 2 or 3 people taking the CHL class. Now with Obama craziness, most instructors are booked 3 months ahead with a full class. Obama has been good to the CHL instructor economy.

I was referring to the original topic. One on one for ten hours...yep...none of you are that entertaining..... .

Having others in the class brings thoughts and opinions other than your own.
